MSRP should be under $150,000  but the guy at the golf tournament yesterday said that were only making around 3,500 total an only ~650 this year and one of them already was GIVEN to the winner yesterday at Doral. :grr:

1. I saw them run at Sebring
Edited on Mon Mar-08-04 12:39 PM by ewagner
when they first came out in the late '60s.

Saw one on display at a Ford Dealership outside of Orlando that same year and the salesman made me leave because I was drooling all over it!

on edit: I camped out at the "hairpin curve" at Sebring. Unfortunately one of the GTs got its' brakes too hot toward evening and they glazed over. It sent the GT right into the barricades in front of me. I almost cried!

2. I figure the only reason why somebody would need one of these
Edited on Mon Mar-08-04 12:40 PM by elfwitch
is to make up for a very small penis.
A REAL MAN could drive a Geo Metro hatchback and still seem verile and sexy.

But I could be wrong.

3. That could be true but...
If you have a Ford GT, society deems it unimportant how long your penis is.

So, either way, you win!

4. No, I'm pretty sure that most "chicks"
would look at it exactly as a vain attempt to compensate for an inadequate vehicle in the pants garage.

Conspicuous consumption never makes up for a tiny pinga.

9. Shallow appeal...
That is exactly it. It appeals to the shallow.
Nobody needs a car that goes that fast.
Nobody needs a car that expensive.
The only reason why someone gets a car like that is to show off that they have the money to afford such a useless item.
It costs way more than most people's homes.
Whether it is compensating for a small penis or not, it most definitely screams, "DICK!!!!"

But isn't it lovely to be able to share these feelings?
I think big over-expensive gas guzzling pollution making road hazards are unnecessary and shallow.
You don't think that.

Isn't that keen? Discourse. Even on something so trivial as a choice of vehicle.

...sounds to me like it was started by a jealous guy in a Geo Metro...

There's a difference between enjoying a great automobile and simply flaunting your wealth.

17. No.
In order for you to be exempt from being persecuted for your choice in automobiles on DU, you must comform absolutely to the Code of Ethics:

1) Your car must be small. Or a minivan.

2) Your car must be fuel-efficient. It can be driven all day, everyday, as long as it gets 40+MPG. You can drive solo seven days a week, and jump in your car everytime you need to get a Twinkie from the 7-11 two blocks away, just as long as your car's impact on the environment is relatively low.

3) Your car must be blue. Just because.

4) Your car must be non-union made. Because that benefits society as a whole.

There are so many people on this forum, and in general, who rush to judgement on SUVs and muscle cars, while refusing to acknowledge that ALL motor vehicles are a severe impact on the environment, and on our society in general. They KNOW that, deep down so they deflect their guilt onto the more visible automotive consumers among us.

I like to call these people drivers of the "Honda Pious". Thank you, thank you very much!

If you drive a car, any car, you're part of the problem. The rate in which you consume petroleum is just a matter of splitting hairs.

I particularly love the threads which begin with "I was passing this H2 in traffic, and I flpped the driver the bird, because he's obviously an asshole". Okay, first off, you're driving faster than the H2, and statistically, that means you are more likely to be involved in an accident. Secondly, can we say "rush to judgement" again? And lastly, it must be comforting to be simple enough to actually sit in a moving car and be critical of someone else's use of fossil fuels.

/end pet peeve.

27. I don't think that merely driving a SUV is the problem....
If you need it, drive it. If your life requires you to haul around stuff that could not be handled by your run of the mill sedan, then by all means get what you need to live your life.

I think that the problem many people have with SUVs and luxury pickup trucks (i.e Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes-Benz G) is that people are not buying them as work vehicles. People are not hauling big or heavy stuff around in them. People are not buying them because they need bigger vehicles to accommodate more people.

They are driving these land yachts around just to be showy and snooty. They can't park these monsters. They pollute like mad. They are even hazards when on the road because you can't see around them.

That is the problem a lot of people have with these unnecessarily extravagant vehicles.

28. I understand that...
...and there have been innumerable posts debating this here in the Lounge.

My beef is with a catagorization of "all" SUV drivers as being a certain type of individual, which is a stereotype people here seem to encourage. As you pointed out, some people actually use their SUVs for their intended purpose (I'm one of them), while others do not. But some 'progressives' on this site find it completely acceptable to judge, and in some cases advocate assault and violence upon SUV drivers because they assume that person is driving an SUV out of vanity, or any other reason which doesn't count as acceptible by the person making the comment. Why I drive what I drive really isn't anyones business but my own. I paid for my vehicle, and I pay to support its costs.

Why is someone with a four-passenger Toyota Camry who drives alone to and from work everyday exempt from criticism? What about virtually empty seven-passenger minivans, which are in abundance around here?

Basically, I drive an SUV (12 year old 4Runner). I take it camping, load it up with car-less participants for progressive events/demonstrations, and help take disabled kids on trips into the deep woods with my 4x4 club. It's a relatively efficient 4-cylinder engine, but it's a physically huge vehicle. That said, I don't feel I have to justify why I drive what I drive to anyone. I can't wait for the day when some self-righteous 'environmentally-friendly' driver flips me off because of my big, bad, black SUV, and then slows down enough to see my DU and impeach Bush bumperstickers. God forbid they should actually get to know me and find out what I do with my truck, how often I walk or take public transit, or the fact that I have invested considerable sums in alternative fuel research. I don't deserve anyone's scorn for what I choose to drive, and basically those people can kiss my elevated, sainted ass.

30. Then you are a peach!
You use your vehicle as it was intended. I don't really think anyone here would disrespect you for that.

Living in Texas, you see a lot of weekend cowboys that drive double-wide super king cab extra long bed eight wheeled monstrosities with bed liners and bed covers. You know they don't use those trucks for anything except stroking their ego. The drive horribly and can't park.

These are the people that need a good swift kick in the trunk, if you know what I mean.

Shalom!

31. and I should have to participate in a highway arms race
when I HAVE to drive my Ford Escort to work because a percentage of SUV drivers have penis envy/penis size issues?

You wanna own one? Cool, I say pay an annual 80% tax to pay for the roads your vehicles damage due to weight, expanded parking areas or SUV only parking areas at ALL local stores, malls, and downtown areas, and tpo offset the skyrocketing cost of auto insurance brought on my too little brains and too much sense of invincibility.

My two cents.

35. That's exactly the kind of generalisation I'm talking about.
80% tax?

Okay, I logged about 7,000 miles on my big, bad SUV in 2003.

The average yearly mileage on a passenger vehicle in the US is 18,000 miles.

So...explain to me again how my driving an SUV warrants being discriminated against in the tax structure.

No, wait, continue to wave that huge brush around...maybe you'll get some paint on me if you keep trying.

And, as far as malls, etc goes...they are private property. If the owners want to penalise large-vehicle owners for what they drive, that would be commercial suicide. The business should offset the cost of 'expanding parking areas', if that needs to be done. Or, better yet, offer valet or mass-transit options which are viable.

Honestly, I'd say half the drivers I see have absolutely no idea how to park in painted spaces or parallel, regardless of what they drive. If some Jetta driver manages to park across two spaces, go yell at him, not me.

37. it's cool man
I get a bee in my bonnet about SUVs because I've had plenty of run-ins with them. I shouldn't paint with a broad brush. I suppose it's a two way street. A little courtesy wouldn't kill me and it wouldn't kill the SUV drivers around here either.

As for parking lots, what I mean about designated parking is backing out of a space between two of those things. I've been in and witnessed enough accidents from that scenario.

Okay, scrap the 80% tax idea, but make everyone who drives a vehicle the size/weight of an Explorer have to have a CDL and abide by CDL rules.

40. This is an aside, but...
I recently discovered that, at least here in BC, all you need to drive one of those HUGE 40' motorhomes is a regular drivers' license. I had no idea. Those things are as big as semi trucks, but because of the relatively low weight, they aren't considered 'trucks'.

I remember seeing one a few years ago with a little pickup truck attached to a tow-bar, and the driver had absolutely no clue that the pickup he was towing had blown a tire and caught fire.

You wouldn't want to race it in the snow. You can safely get from point A to B in the snow. If you live in a climate with lots of snow, staying home isn't always an option.

Subaru's? Hell, all of them are all wheel drive, aren't they? Made for snow.

But spending $250,000 on a car, just to drive it in the snow? Fiscally foolish.
