I soooo want this gadget!
The Energy Detective

http://www.theenergydetective.com/index.html

TED (The Energy Detective) is a simple, yet extremely accurate, home energy monitor that allows you to see electricity usage in real-time. You no longer have to wait for the 'electricity bill surprise'! TED will accurately tell you what your bill is going to be long before the electric bill arrives. Meanwhile, you will learn more about conserving energy, saving money, and helping save the environment.

Also must have TED Footprints, the software that goes with it

I'd spend $200.. to SAVE! and have fun! :P

3. Sounds pretty good to me,
I'm currently trying out this "magic jack" thingy...so far, it seems to be working, rather well...

We had to call the electric company out in Stilwell, OK because our electric bill went from about 100$ to 270$ in one month...we thought their numbers were off, and they sent a guy out to measure how much energy each appliance used...and come to find out, the guy we had living in the house, was using the all electric furnace, and he didn't tell us...or rather, he denied using it....it was interesting seeing the electric guy go around taking his measurements and what not...

5. Yup, 2 months ago I tossed my brother
my bill went down $40 the first month. I'm pitling with new ways to cut usage down.

This thing would make it easy.

:)

I'm gonna get one, I think. Probably soon. I'm really on an energy efficiency quest and this looks like good, geeky fun.

12. You could use a "Kill-a-watt" to do the same thing.
For about $25

14. Do tell.....
What is it? How does it work? The thing above appeals to me b/c we just bought a passive solar house with some interesting design features. Upstairs bedroom w/ loft opening to living room, but with a retractable sliding door. Baseboard heating in every room. Fireplace. I feel like I'm shooting in the dark as to how to keep it bedroom alone warmest--and come summer--coolest. Much less whole house efficiency. When to draw curtains, when to open loft door, when to turn on baseboards, their relative efficiency vs furnace, etc.....

Would the kill-a-watt help in that regard?

:hi:

15. Probably not. It is only a plug in type monitor.
