26. Yeah, I think that's the same place.
The same guy had a vegan restaurant there before. The food was pretty good, but there's enough vegan food in Portland that I'm not sure how he figured people would drag themselves out to the back of beyond (and up that ridiculous hill in the parking lot) on a regular basis.

Especially since a good share of the customer base doesn't drive.

35. You have to understand: Portland's like vegan Mecca.
They have:
more vegan restaurants than you can shake a celery stick at
vegan tattoo shop
vegan clothing store
vegan bakeries
vegan grocery store
vegan bars (getting dinner and drinks while watching Whale Wars on the bar TV was weird and fun)
vegan taco cart...

because there are a metric fuckload of vegans there.

40. Oh -- I had no idea
I'm not a tattoo person so I don't know much about it. I always assumed the inks were made with dye from plants; guess I was wrong!

Do vegan tattoo inks last as long? Is the coloration the same over time?

I got tattooed with the non-vegan ink. How well a tattoo holds up has more to do with the artist than anything else.

It's expensive, but works well (and has about a billion uses). The Dr. Bronner's tattoo hemp stuff is almost as good. Both are vegan.

Merry Hempsters makes a vegan tattoo balm stick, but again, hemp oil.

I just slathered shitloads of cheap moisturizer from Trader Joes on until the thing quit itching. I think next time I'll try coconut oil, because it makes my skin happy and it smells good.

59. Try the Tamanu Oil by New Chapter
It costs like $20 for a tiny bottle, but it seriously lasts FOREVER. It comes from some nut grown on an island in the pacific somewhere.

You can use it for everything. Burns, cuts, poison ivy. It makes stuff heal faster, and all you need is a tiny dab.

56. Generally the issue is the glycerin base in the ink.
With vegan ink it's plant based, with other inks it could be animal or plant based, probably whichever's cheaper at the time.

I found another one for you: the "Tincture of Green Soap" a lot of artists use to prep the skin also has glycerin in it--and, like you said, it could be either animal or plant based depending on which one's cheaper at the time.
