Are Celtic Crosses a hate symbol?
I want to get a Celtic cross tattoo on my upper arm, as a salute to mu Irish heritage and as a balance to the tricolor shamrock I have on my other arm.

The problem is when I was doing research on how I wanted it to look I kept finding celtic crosses show up connected to white power groups. Now no one's going to mistake me for a skinhead, but I don't want people to think I'm into that kind of shit because I want to honor my Irishness.

So I guess my question is, if you saw someone with a Celtic cross tattoo what would you assume?

5. Yeah, and it sucks.
I mean, I guess I can see the appeal since us Irish are the most physically white people on the planet, but I hate how my heritage is getting hijacked by morons.

....dammit...i'm irish, too...3rd generation on my fathers side. my mothers ancestors were welsh, and helped settle the jamestown colonies in the late 1600's...try that for a whiter shade of pale. i'm green eyed and blonde, but i grow a red beard...THAT's WASPy !!!

i have a clover tattooed on my calf, with flames rising up from it...i have been told it was a hate symbol by someone once, but i have yet to see it. the crosses are kind of a white power thing mainly because ireland has very few non whites living there. sick, huh?

my little clover tattoo.....and.........coat of arms..........

7. well, the Xian "right" fundies have hijacked the Christian Cross for their
own exploitation, so why would we be surprised that the Celtic Cross has been as well. There's the problem with symbols, I suppose.

How about a nice "Kiss me, I'm Irish!" LOL

Hehe.

Dig it:

AND check this out. Last year I was in Britain for awhile, and I got the chance to visit Bath for a few days. I was really surprised by the pediment from the temple there. It's got this weird sort of Roman/Celtic design in it.

This guy is the central figure of the pediment. He's right in the center of the thing:

Neat, eh?

12. Hey, I saw that!
But isn't he supposed to be spitting water into the pool? Maybe my memory is muddled by all the mead I consumed while there, or by the disturbing phone call I endured when I called my mother from there.

Good times. I'm happy to be reminded of having been to Bath.

18. Hmm- I don't know about a spitting one, but this
guy was originally up in the pediment on the front of the temple- right on the facade. I thought it was so odd the way it had celtic knot work interlaced between some Roman figures... and this overall blend of styles. VERY cool site.

Did you check out the coins and notes they'd recovered from the baths? Those things are great- they've got all these little prayer inscriptions from people. They range from, "please give that bitch herpes (or something)" to "help me get my finances in order". So cool. :D

15. Here in Germany it is actually an outlawed symbol
that may not be displayed in public. With a tattoo like that you´d have problems with authorities all over Europe. It´s solely used as a White Power symbol over here.

Well, except for Eireann where you can see it on every graveyard in masses. Even there I noticed it has pretty much disappeared from the public eye.

17. This is the first time I've heard this.
Maybe because I don't hang around with too many white supremacists, or even know any for that matter.
But, Fuckem, Let's take it back !!!! And the US flag while we are at it !!!!
I say you get the Celtic Cross tattoo antishrub !!! And wear it with pride !! Maybe temper it with a peace sign ??
As for OUR flag, I'm thinking of flying The Stars and Stripes along with a "Kerry For President" lawn sign !!! That oughta piss off the religious right wing kooks !!!! Fuckem.
Happy Saint Paddy's Day !!!!!!!!

No fascist gets ownership of it, as far as I'm concerned.
