My "L Word" series review...
My grade for the TV series as a whole (scale of A to F):

"B-"

For those of you wondering why I am rating it so high, here's why- For the six seasons that this show was on the air, it was the best acted, best directed show on television. There were many moments that made my jaw drop (yes, I am a straight male, but I'm not just talking about the sex scenes...).

For thos of you who think I am giving this show too low a grade, here's why- there were WAY to many moments throughout the history of the show where the writing came up short. Forget about the series finale for a moment (although it is a good example- first 55 minutes- awesome. Last 5 minutes- terrible). I can forgive some of the bad dialogue. I can forgive some of the cringe-worthy moments (most involving Max). I can forgive Jenny's bitchiness in Season's 4 and 5 (I can almost forgive her lack of a human soul in Season 6. Almost.).

Here is what I can't forgive:

- The killing off of Dana in Season 3.

- Getting rid of Helena for most of Season 5.

- Since Season 1 was so awesome, I can't forgive any major production changes that happened in between Seasons 1 and 2 (change in directors, writers, technicians, etc...)

- Season 6- Almost all of it.

After six bad episodes, I saw episode seven of this final season, and my eyes were glued to the screen. I talked with my girlfriend over the phone and told her "the L Word might pull off the impossible." What I meant was, it might take a bad season and go out with an awesome, memorable bang. For the first 50 to 55 minutes of the final episode, I was on the edge of my seat.

And it all came crashing down.

Overall, the "L Word" was a groundbreaking show. But it could have been a lot more.

But... I still don't regret having seen every single episode, some more than once. What the hell... instead of a "B-", I'll give it a "B".

FINAL GRADE: B

Peace,

2. Overall, I'd Give It A B+
It was very well acted, very well done. However, the scripts could have been a lot stronger. For instance, there was very little politics on the show, and Bette's character would have been a lot more involved politically than what she was portrayed as. In the first season, they gave Bette some political stuff. Then, they backed off. I think that if you're doing a show about Lesbians living in Los Angeles during the Bush years, then there would have been a lot more politics on the show.

3. Rose Troche fucks up yet another project
Edited on Mon Mar-09-09 11:43 PM by JackBeck
By making it all about herself and playing out her own drama, instead of actually producing art through a creative filter.

Does this woman have an original bone in her body, or does she thrive on dyke drama to make a buck?

She's such a phony and I groaned any time she directed an episode.

5. Yeah, I'd give it a B+ overall, but it was often A
However, I've only seen the first 2 seasons or so.

I'm a bisexual woman and I am thankful that they can have a totally lesbian soap opera. It captured the unique lesbian sense of humor and community, although it was often a bit luppy (lesbian yuppy).

6. I'm a lesbian and I really disliked this show. I thought the writing
was terrible. It was so unrealistic. I live in L.A. and most of my friends feel the same way. I didn't even watch this last season - I just couldn't tolerate it.

7. I've always wondered how lesbians felt about this show...
it's always seemed contrite, pretentious and kind of, um....vapid to me.

One of the most blatant errors I saw in the show was when Alice, supposedly one of the most intelligent and hippest characters on the show, was completely oblivious to military culture regarding her girlfriend. I mean gays in the military has been a hot topic since at least 1992 and here she goes on a base like a woman in heat and is flummoxed her girlfriend gets court martialed.

10. I have to admit
I thought that sometimes too, they make lesbians come across as total predators and none of the ones I know are like that, I can see your point. Still made for good tv tho, i thought anyway.
