Settle another raging, marriage-destroying debate between MrLaraMN and me, please.
On Wheel of Fortune during the bonus round (shut up, I'm too tired to fight over which channel is on after dinner) they always give the contestant the letters R,S,T,L,N, and E, and then several of his/her own choosing.

I swear to effin' God that back in the day they didn't give the contestant the R,S,T,L,N, and E, but people always chose those letters anyway.

MrLaraMN says I 'm full of shit. I am not. I am SO correct. Tell me he is stupid.

Right?

13. Here's documented proof
Edited on Mon Mar-09-09 11:09 AM by PeaceNikki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel_of_Fortune_(U.S._game_show)">He's totally stupid

In 1987, after players were awarded cash rather than shopping for prizes, five bonus prizes were made available each day for the Bonus Round, with a new set of prizes introduced at the start of each week. Players chose the prize of their preference prior to the start of the Bonus Round and a prize could be won more than once each week by multiple contestants.

Beginning in 1988, players were automatically shown the instances of R, S, T, L, N and E appearing in the puzzle and asked to choose three more consonants and one additional vowel. Additionally, the time limit in which to solve the puzzle was reduced to 10 seconds.

Didn't the winner also "shop" at the end of a show (looong time ago). The products were on set and everything.

I may be wrong. I've had that argument before though and claim victory :)

41. Hah, I also remember this and have had that argument.
I remember it because the contestant had to keep spending money until there wasn't enough to buy any of the stuff in the 'room'. I though that was such a ridiculous idea since it was obvious that the winner didn't really WANT that giraffe-shaped umbrella stand!

He probably doesn't remember that there was a time contestants had to "shop" with their winnings in the pseudo studio store.

I was so glad they did away with that. Those were some craptastic prizes.

18. It use to be that no letters were given and people choose their own...
and they ended up always being RSTLN and E.

So WoF decided to just give those letters and then let the contestant pick their own.

Also, after each round, the winning player got to use their money to pick out gifts. And in the early years, the puzzles sometimes used Greek and Cyrillic letters.

Imagine having to pick out all that stuff, and then having to pay income tax on it?

I like the 'give the players cash' thing better, if only for that point.

23. You're right... there were no 'gimme' letters back when Chuck Wollery was hosting
People always pick those, though, because they are the most commonly used letters in the English language.
The 'gimme' letters came along sometime in the Sajak administration. *L*
