People don't want to pay more state taxes but still want all the services (including great big state schools with great big reputations), research grant money's drying up all over the place (it plays a big part in paying the staff), and the only place they have to turn for more money is the students, who can least afford it.
I was really torqued to hear one of the uni. presidential candidates talk about the importance of raising faculty salaries but said nothing about how classified staff are working second jobs and getting food stamps, how there's increasing reliance on part-time adjuncts who are paid nowhere near a living wage, how students are working full-time and more to try to cover tuition costs, how financial aid isn't keeping up with spiraling costs.... Although I think that was the guy that DIDN'T get hired IIRC.
The whole way public universities are run and funded has turned into a giant clusterthingy. And as usual, the people at the bottom of the heap are the people who get trickled on.
On the bright side, I'm glad to hear LyricKid and you are on the road to recovery. Hopefully Rhythm is getting some much-needed sleep.
