So can anyone tell me what Saint Martin was doing in the Fields that
was good enough to get him a ticket to Sainthood.

I mean really, couldn't he just as easily been called Saint-Martin-In-The-Deli, that is if he took the seeds out of Rye or saw Jesus in a good pumpernickel or in true Catholic tradition, slathered mayo on Corned Beef thus forever taking that particular delightful deli delicacy and canonizing it.

3. The church is named after St. Martin of Tours.

Presumably it was once surrounded by fields, thus St. Martin in the Fields. There's a St. Joseph on the Mountain near me.

4. You're thinking of St. Murray, with the rye and all.
Verily, he also performed the Miracle of the Pickle.

is an Anglican church at the northeast corner of Trafalgar Square in the City of Westminster, London. Its patron is Saint Martin of Tours...

The earliest extant reference to the church is from 1222, with a dispute between the Abbot of Westminster and the Bishop of London as to who had control over it. It was decided in favour of Westminster, and used by the monks of Westminster Abbey.

The church was rebuilt by Henry VIII in 1542 to avoid plague victims from the area having to pass through his Palace of Whitehall. At this time, it was literally "in the fields" in an isolated position between the cities of Westminster and London.'

7. Exactly...
...and it would have remained an Anglican parish no different from dozens in London, had not a group of classical musicians decided to form a pick-up orchestra. Trying to find a name for their ensemble, they chose the church (or the subway stop named after it -- opinions differ) and named themselves "The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields." When said orchestra became famous in the 1960s, the name likewise became known to classical music enthusiasts worldwide.

6. I don't think that taking the seeds out of Rye would be enough
to make him a saint, exactly...
