So I found these weights.
My morning walk takes me across the lot where the neighborhood boat launch is. A few days ago I noticed a round disk in the gravel driveway. I picked it up, and then saw two more. They're about the size of an Oreo cookie and heavily encrusted with rust. They look really old.

Even with all the rust I can make out that originally there was a small hole in the center with a slot going out to the edge. I think they originally looked something like this:

They appear to be weights for an old fashioned scale. These weigh a quarter pound each. Today I found another one and a small 'Y' shaped piece, also heavily rusted.

Wonder where they came from and how they got there.

1. I _love_ "found" stuff like that.
We don't really have "junk" stores here, or even garage sales, so my quest to gather stuff (the rustier, the better) for assemblage work has kinda hit a dead end. Congrats on a cool find!

6. One of the side effects of living in a less consumeristic society
People don't buy as much crap, so they don't throw out as much crap. Interesting... :)

Hope you are well Heidi! :hi:

7. Almost all consumer goods here (that I know of, and in our family, anyway)
get repurposed/recycled or given to our version of Goodwill. I wouldn't say the Swiss are less consumer-oriented (I'm ashamed to admit to you the number of iPods, iPhones, stereo stuff, computers, fountain pens, books and art supplies we have), but in our family (mother-in-law, sister-in-law, SIL's partner, two goddaughters, CMW and me) we give a lot of thought to purchases: How useful is it? How well is it made? How long will it last? When I'm finished with it, what am I gonna do with it? To be honest, this just seems to be a more sustainable way of life for all of us.

Wonderful to see you, my friend! :* (I'm okay in general -- and even better now that spring is on its way.)

2. Yes, that's exactly what they are - now, where did they come from?...
"Where were you on the night of August 23rd, 1973?"

3. Hard to tell if they're really old, or just really rusty
and not so old.
This place is miles from any kind of commercial establishment.
Until the early 80s it was just woods and swamp.
I'm thinking they might have come in with the original load of gravel years ago, or possibly in a load of fill dirt or something.
For now, it's a real mystery.

4. If you can't sell them to a local antique dealer, the scrap yard would be interested.

5. Those were used to weight down Jimmy Hoffa's body when they dumped him in the bay.
Look for work boots.
