My PC is slow, slow, slow.
First, it is slow at startup. I have a 50 image screensaver. Would that slow it down in your opinion? Then, it is slow searching, slow responding, and slow after I click on something. It's like a delayed reaction. I click, it waits 10 seconds or so, then it responds.

I have an old celeron processor and probably need something new and up to date. Are Macs quicker on response time? Anyone have experience with both Macs and PCs?

2. I've had both at one time or another.
I don't remember them helping with speed. Can spyware programs enhance the speed of your PC? If so, I will download them again.

4. What's running at startup and what can you see in your system tray?
How much RAM do you have, and how many programs do you run simultaneously?

5. 256 RAM.
I must need more RAM, because it is always telling me that I am low on virual memory. Sometimes, it tells me that when nothing but the screensaver is running. Also, I have Norton AV, Ascentive Speed Scan Pro, and Windows Defender all working in the background.

7. I would dump the Norton AV
as it's become a bloated monster over the years. Replace it one of the popular freeware alternatives (AVG or Avast).

And I would ditch the fifty-image screensaver while you're figuring things out. 256MB isn't a lot but it shouldn't be causing a ten second latency.

8. Taking your advice on Norton
and may take your advice on the screensaver. It's hard to part with 56 centerfolds that I've grown so accustomed to and fond of over time. But, if it is taxing my system's memory, maybe I better. Thanks for the free advice.

12. I second that, but would recommend Avira as well. I just dumped AVG
after about three to four years of using them. Something about 8.0 kept corrupting eternally and it simply could not update, constantly asking for restarts.

20. I've been having the same problems with AVG
for many months now. I've had it for 8 or 9 years now and it was always trouble free before. It almost seems like they want people to stop using it or upgrade to the pay version. It's nothing but a pain in the ass now.

I'll check out Avira. Time for something else.

11. I have macs and PCs and..... OK, that was just plain mean of me.
to load an animated gif and lead you to believe I was serious. It was wrong.

So, let me try to seriously help.

All the advice up thread is correct.

Memory is super cheap these days and you would do well to throw in 512M or one GB, but only if your motherboard and OS will support it.

Checking your system tray is huge. Windows runs so much shit in the background and you don't even know it, and the spyware and adshit ties up resources further, so run the utilities recommended.

You've got to uninstall any programs you never use and uninstall printers and other peripheral support if you no longer use them.

Also, I clean up the hard drive and defrag regularly, that's in your accessories.

On occasion, I've backed up files and dumped the hard drive and reloaded the OS. Windows 98SE is pretty popular among owners of older PCs, don't know how old your is or if you're running XP or NT.

My macs are faster and they never slow down, so if you're ever looking to replace what you have, even if it's getting a used one, I can't recommend macs highly enough.

Cheers and again, sorry for playing that trick on you. :toast:

and it's not Microsoft! I would use it if there weren't some applications for work I need that won't run with it.
