My Freeper coworkers reaction to Martha Stewart's conviction
They applauded, cheered, wanted to have her hanged. Basically, howling-at-the-moon, raving, grab-a-torch-and-pitchfork mentality.

I work in an energy trading firm in Houston. Most of my coworkers suffered because of enron; either they were laid off from Enron or a related company, or lost money in Enron stock, or both.

All had close friends who lost their jobs at Enron.

Their reaction to Andy Fastow's conviction? Mild approval.

I asked them why they were so enthusiastic over Stewart's conviction, which was over a much smaller sum of money, and hadn't hurt any of them personally, when Fastow's conviction barely registered with them, despite Enron having hurt all of them.

They just shook their heads, and said, "You just don't get it, do you?"

I said, "Oh I get it. Stewart's a rich, prominent *woman*, and a *Democrat*. That's why, in your opinion, she had to vurn. That, and it helps make it appear that it's not just Republicans who are evil, greedy little bastards."

The Oberhauptfreeper among them just opened and closed his mouth a few times, like a fish out of water, while the vein in his temple throbbed. A few more incidents like that, and I just might give him an aneurism!

Hee hee!

It's actually kinda fun, living in the belly of the beast, and taunting republicans.

3. I'm almost afraid to ask
Is Martha Stewart a Democrat? What's a "Freeper"?

4. A Freeper...
A Freeper is a name for a radically right wing person. The name derived from a web site titled Free Republic. General short hand for a Fox watching and or Rush listening * supporter!

13. Hello Bluecollar!
Nice to meet you too...and I agree, this is a good place for a Dem to be. I've learned such a lot here...just by lurking, and the occasional response! I can then go out and carry the message to everyone who will listen!

Hey, doesn't Scarborough Country count as a "Freeper" hangout? I get so angry with that sanctimonious twit, and his skewed point of view...AARGH!

5. So what about Skilling's indictment?
or whatever it was - since he was a big Enron booger butt.

Did they care about HIM getting in trouble?

10. He hasn't been convicted yet.
And I'm sure they'll show less emotion when he is, than they did when Martha was.

9. I am glad she was convicted
and i will be MORE glad when they get Kenny Boy

i may be in the minority here but i am damn f*cking tired of the 1% getting away with this shit and not having to pay the piper.

do i think Martha deserves 20 years? no. BUT i think she DOES deserve SOME jail time and REAL fines that will hit her in the pocket book.

also, the Martha case has reignighted debate and REcast the spotlight on Enron and THAT is a good thing.

i don't hate anybody because they are rich but i DO HATE people who are rich and suffer no consequences BECAUSE of their wealth and status. the owner of my company is one of them and it makes me sick.

she did the crime, she should do the time

12. I'm not defending Martha...
It just annoyed me that my anti-woman, anti-democracy, anti-free-speech, anti-critical-thinking, anti-any-thinking-whatsoever, anti-anybody-but-themselves coworkers felt Martha more worthy of jail than the Enronites.

15. Martha blew it..
Let's face it, she didn't need the moolah! Also, she is not always a very nice person, you know, stiffing the help, and pinning gardeners up against the wall with her truck.
However, I think this verdict was based more on who she is than what she did. Sure, she should be punished...but twenty years. .. puh-leez!

Just remember OJ...

17. How about that Donald Trump?
Now there's a lovable guy, and I'll bet he's *never* done any insider trading! (BTW- she wasnt convicted of insider trading, she was convicted of lying and conspiracy about a thrown out charge).

18. My mostly liberal co-workers were bashing Martha
at a party yesterday. Someone tried to make the $40,000 point, but was quickly stifled. So I said, "One incredibly rich woman Democrat down, one to go. Of course, Oprah will have to be framed," and got cow looks.

I dislike Martha Stewart as much as anybody, but it's so friggin' obvious. If she had not been an incredibly rich woman Democrat, she'd still be merrily insider-trading away. And people who share my politics are not making the connection.

Incidentally, this party was in another town. When it was over, the host's husband (who had not attended) greeted us outside in a Confederate flag hat. So I'm like okay, my friend not only lives in a town where it's OK to wear a Confederate flag hat, but she's married to a guy who wears one - in Colorado, no less. Then on the way out of town, we passed a strip mall with something called "The Christian Marketplace" as its centerpiece. I've never noticed anything like that outside of Utah, where they have businesses named LDS this and LDS that.

Suddenly, yesterday, I saw this other town in a completely different light. And realized I must exist in a cushy little bubble of liberalism.
