What causes coughing in dogs?
She doesn't have a fever, she's negative for heartworms (as of three weeks ago), and she's not around filth or mold.

She coughed a little this morning, and had about 5 GNARLY sustained coughing spells throughout the day. Other than the cough she seems fine.

It sounds deep and chesty. :(

2. ...
I was going to say "bong hits?" but I thought it would b a dick move when the OP is concerned about a beloved pet. So in essence, glad you did it first :P

I didn't see her slip a sack, but I wasn't looking every second.

Man, the last time she slipped me a sack... was memorable. :smoke:

3. Many things can cause coughing in dogs.
Best to have your vet check it out, especially considering how you've described it.

14. So to speak, yes.
Considering that most dogs will eat just about anything, it's possible that something will get caught in the gullet.

8. We've already got an appointment on Monday
Yes, the vet needs to check BOTH the rash on her belly AND check the area where she busted her tooth and later ripped her stitches. :eyes:

Pip's been at the vet a LOT lately. I'm counting four times in three months. :eyes:

(We love Pip, but it's been a revolving veterinary door lately.)

4. Kennel cough?
Edited on Sun Feb-15-09 02:17 AM by Angel
My pup had kennel cough after staying overnight at the vets last year. Has she been boarded lately, or spent time at the vets? A round of antibiotics cleared him up but it sounded like he had whooping cough until it did. I hope she gets well very soon.

10. Oddly enough, I hadn't considered that 'cause I hadn't remembered her being around other dogs
but she DID stay overnight at the vet on inauguration day. I don't know what the incubation period is, but it's possible.

17. Coughing can mean heart problems
The coughing is to try to get the heart to beat correctly if it's going to fast or erratic. How old is she?

19. She's 5
I thought about that, but firstly this came on all of a sudden, secondly it's really deep and chesty, and thirdly I wouldn't think she'd be chasing the other dogs around and coughing instead of barking. ;)

20. lol, probably wouldn't be chasing
and that's kind of young for a heart problem anyway. That's really strange. Hopefully she has just picked up a little doggy cold and will be better soon.

The key symptom was unexplained coughing.

27. He grew up fine, thank you
But it's why we all mention obscure symptoms, sometimes people don't know. What the hell is the good in knowing something if you don't share it, know what I mean??

29. Bodies are so weird
If you had never heard of allergies, would coughing, difficulty breathing, rash, stomachache, and general malaise mean anything to you, or would it be the most bizarre disease you had ever heard of?

(And I used allergies as an example because said dog has a gnarly rash, farts, has ear problems, is sorta fat, loses her hair, and generally is a fussy little dog. Did I mention she's a cattle dog mix, with possible pit bull and boxer? :eyes: Yeah, you'd think she'd be bomb proof, but no, she's got a lot of odd health problems.)

I'm glad your son is okay. :pals:

28. Gosh, did I diagnose anything?
No. I said "can mean". So if the dog was old or had other symptoms, the person might not wait until it was too late.

I swear to god I can't say a fucking thing around here without somebody jumping down my throat.

30. I'm sorry if I jumped too quick
like I said, I just had woke and saw this. I deal with silly dog/cat questions all day.

One of which is.. my dog/cat doesn't breath right... what should I do.

It annoys me. Many will leave messages about it calling at 1am for 3 days before I can get a hold of 'em and say.. HEY, der.. take it to a vet.

no hard feelings er nuttin.

:)

21. i'll be serious... my dogs have the run of my farm. they eat all sorts of disgusting things...
when i am not watching. on occasion they will cough and cough... sometimes followed by that "yuuk, yuuk, yuuk" sound before they yack on my carpet.

it might just be something disagreeable that was digested. sometimes something as simple as grass. but that never lasts more that an evening.

good luck...
