I'm thinking of forming a band, and I have a question...
I play drums, and I'm thinking of forming a band with just myself, a bass player, keyboard player, and vocalist (I know, I know, you're probably wondering "why not a guitar player too?"... I'll discuss that in a later post... it has more to do with the style of music I would like to perform...)

What well known bands consist of just drums, base, and keyboard, in addition to a vocalist?

Peace,

2. Well, not well known...
But Whirlwind Heat is a pseudo-punk outfit from Detroit produced by the White Stripes' Jack White. They opened for them in Houston (and elsewhere). Loud, fast, and out of control. Very fun.

BTW are you forming a jazz band?

3. The Captain and Tenille was the first thing to come to mind

But I suspect that's not what you were looking for.

I'll have to think about this...

Edit: Typo, and acknowledgement that C&T used the keyboard for the bass-line, too. Second edit: edited the first edit.

5. Beat me to it
I was just about to update my other post.

Of course, Greg Lake also did guitar solos, but some songs were guitar-free, I believe.

6. In a nutshell, I would call it fusion-pop or progressive-pop...
... I would like to write and perform songs that consistently use odd-meters/odd-time signatures... but without being to "Prog-Rock"... more like October Project and Sting, less like Dream Theater and Mahavishnu Orchestra (I am a fan of ALL of these groups...).

7.  Some prog bands...
ELP, post- Holdsworth U.K., post- Hackett Genesis... there are probably others, but I can't think of them.

9. Drum N' Bass bands
There was a whole movement in the 1990's called drum n' bass that I am pretty sure didn't have guitar. Maybe some synthesizer/keyboard in its place. Can't think of too many bands, but God Lives Underwater comes to mind. Or electronica bands, going way back, like Kraftwerk.

11. It's been done, so there is some precedent
Edited on Sun Aug-10-03 10:32 PM by Rabrrrrrr
ELP being the first to come to mind, along with lots and lots of jazz examples. I assume you are looking for info for bands to listen to, perhaps, to get a feel for how it might sound.

But if you are asking to ask "Is there a market?" or "Has it been done before?" I'll say - irrelevent. Just do it!

And good luck and godspeed to you!

13. Emerson Lake and Palmer
Lake sometimes plays guitar but he's better known as a bass player.

I posted this without seeing the other posts because I figured nobody, ever, would twig on ELP. Turns out 5 other people posted it.
