18. Bjork, I am told has a highly trained voice
Not whining I'll agree with but if she has a more pleasing voice than a 'self made whiner' like Sarah Mclachlan I'll beg to differ.

She must be the Nancy Reagan of Ireland. Does she really expect someone to listen to that song and say "Oh, the Cranberries have a great point."?

Abby Stinkin' Lincoln has the worse voice of anyone I've ever heard. I can sing better than she does and I totally suck. When she sings it sounds like the record player is speeding up and slowing down. And Dakota isn't much better.

- and many more

52. I love Nyro, but her singing was sometimes.....
way out of control. Some of her originals are better. I prefer her version of
"Eli's Coming" to the one by Three Dog Night.

On her very first album her singing was more toned down, and its a great record.
She was about 19 when it was made, and all the songs are originals. Amazing.

38. I'm honored to be the first to say that Mariah Carey's
voice makes me want to hang myself. It literally goes right to my spine to cause squirming thereof.

Vocal gymnastics must be forced to go the way of the 8-track; attainable for those who can somehow appreciate its charms (they do, apparently, exist), but out of range for the rest of us.

39. An obscure one
Edited on Fri Mar-05-04 05:37 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
In the late 1980s a singer named Kyoko Koizumi was popular in Japan. Apparently, she drove teenage boys wild with lust, but her singing voice was unpleasant and always slightly out of tune. Unfortunately, this didn't prevent her from being all over TV and radio. No pop singer has ever annoyed me as much. Her grating voice haunted my summer trips to Japan.

gets on my nerves. No affect, maybe? I do like the song Wedding Ring, but can't take too much of them. I just for once want her to rock out or shreik and wail like Yoko. For me Yoko gets a pass just for being Yoko and ahead of her time. BTW Irish wailing is usually cool with me.

43. Anything By Kelly "I-Can't-Find-The-Note" Clarkson
Seriously... she just makes up the tune as she goes along. In trying to show off her vocal range she loop-de-loops and performs vocal acrobatics and contortions before EVER settling in on the CORRECT note.

The resulting tune of the song she sings is NOTHING like it's supposed to be.

It's horrible. Boys 2 Men does it. Mariah does it. All 4 One does it. Beyonce does it.

It just SUCKS!!!

Call me old fashioned... I don't mind a little vibrato when a note is held. I don't mind a Patty Labelle-style "low-to-high wind-up"... but these kids are missing something. The PURITY and beauty of a voice that can hit the RIGHT note directly and hold the note consistently is more admirable than the vocal tricks of today.

Rant over.
