Tornado outbreak possible today in parts of TX, OK, LA, and AR
Edited on Tue Feb-10-09 02:00 AM by RL3AO
Keep your on the sky (or preferably the news) tomorrow evening and night if you are in the green area below and really keep your eye on things if you are in the red (moderate risk) area.

Heres some of the techno-babble from the SPC (with the important notes bolded by me)

MODELS CONTINUE TO SUGGEST TSTM DEVELOPMENT WILL BE POSSIBLE BY
EARLY-MID AFTERNOON ACROSS PARTS OF ERN TX/SERN OK INTO ADJACENT
PARTS OF AR/LA.
SOME SURFACE HEATING WITHIN THE MOISTURE RETURN
SHOULD PROVE SUFFICIENT FOR CONVECTION TO DEVELOP WITHIN A WEAKLY
CAPPED AIR MASS. DIFFLUENT FLOW ALOFT ACROSS THE ARKLATEX REGION BY
AFTERNOON SUGGESTS THIS EARLY ACTIVITY SHOULD BE DISCRETE... WHILE
STRENGTHENING SLY WINDS ACROSS THIS AREA INTO THE AFTERNOON WILL
RESULT IN CURVED HODOGRAPHS/TORNADO POTENTIAL.

GREATER SEVERE WEATHER THREAT IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ALONG THE DRY
LINE IN CENTRAL OK TO CENTRAL TX BY LATE AFTERNOON /AFTER 21Z / *note thats 3pm CST*...
GENERALLY ALONG OR JUST EAST OF THE I-35 CORRIDOR.
ADDITIONAL
STRENGTHENING OF THE SLY LLJ /50+ KT/ FROM E TX/LA TO ERN KS/MO WILL
RESULT IN LARGE CURVED HODOGRAPHS AND THE LIKELIHOOD FOR
STRONG/SIGNIFICANT TORNADOES
AS STRONG UPPER FORCING WITH THE TROUGH
SPREADS INTO THE SRN PLAINS. IF CONFIDENCE BECOMES GREATER IN THE
TRACK OF THE PRIMARY SURFACE LOW...PORTIONS OF THE MODERATE RISK
AREA MAY NEED TO BE UPGRADED TO A HIGH RISK.

Its been a slow start to the year tornado wise (especially compared to the hellacious winter and spring last year), but the slow start looks to be coming to an end.

The biggest threat is in the red (moderate) area. Places like KS, MO, and Western IL, KY, and TN will probably be woke up to some strong storms in the middle of the night.

So keep safe guys.

1. We are supposed to have bad weather tomorrow.
Today it is windy. Up to 30 mph. I think we will end up dodging the tornadoes though.

2. My nephew was making rumblings about ditching classes
and chasing today. I wonder if he did? He's chased for 4 years now and has had video shown on CNN and the Weather Channel.

4. my condolences to his parents
Storm chaser videos are cool to watch, but I would have a heart attack if it was my kid doing the chasing.

5. My sister encourages him
her husband is the fearful one. He's told stories (after the fact) of driving down a main road to a motel for the night and suddenly his ears popped and the street lights went out. Then his truck started to shake. They hit the outer edge of a rain-wrapped tornado after dark. They weren't watching the radars as carefully because they were coming in for the night. Scared him good. Scared his mother too!

3. Our weather reporters are already excited
I can't help it...I always feel so happy for them when extreme weather is in the forecast. They try sooo hard to appear serious but you can see the gleam of excitement in their eyes.

Having said that, I hope whatever happens is minimal and I hope everyone (including me!) stays safe.

6. I don't suppose our local channels will carry much in the way of programming
tonight. Since we had a tornado sneak up on us in 1996, they are determined that it won't happen again. As soon as a severe thnderstorm warning or tornado warning is announced anywhere in the viewing area, they switch to nothing but weather broadcasting until it's all over. Sometimes it seems like they are going a little overboard, but I'd much rather know what's going on with severe weather.

8. I used to hardly even notice these warnings.
I mean I noticed, and I'd keep it in mind, but I never really paid it much mind. But now, with the weather changing... I'm starting to think about it more.

Sunday night we had a nasty storm blow through with 75 mph winds... and now this...

Spring approaches.
