March 5, 1951: the first rock and roll record is made!
Edited on Fri Mar-05-04 02:19 PM by NightTrain
March 5, 1951:

One of the greatest records ever made is created this day when Ike Turner & His Band cut "Rocket 88" for Sam Phillips at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis.

Phillips will send the record to Chess, which releases it as by "Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats." The hard-rocking number will zoom up the R&B charts to the coveted #1 slot.

Personel at this session include Jackie Brenston (vocal/baritone sax), Willie Kizart (guitar), Willie Sims (drums), Ike Turner (piano), and Raymond Hill (tenor sax).
