am I the only one who thinks the R&R Hall of Fame is reaching . . .
into the bottom of the barrel for new inductees? . . . this year's class includes ZZ Top, Bob Seger, and Jackson Browne . . . all decent performers I guess, but Hall of Fame material? . . . I think not . . . both ZZ Top and Seger are no better than a lot of bar bands I've seen, and Browne is an adequate singer/songwriter on his good days; on most days he's just mediocre . . .

none of these folks have contributed anything R&R that has actually impacted the genre, imo . . . maybe the problem that all of the real pioneers and major influences have already been inducted, and Wenner just need someone to fill the bill . . . that's what it seems like to me, anyhow . . . I assume that fans will flame away, but I really think the Hall is stretching to the point of contortion by inducting mediocre and, ultimately, quite forgetable acts into what was supposed to be a shrine to those who really made a difference with their music . . .

1. Considering how many great '50s and '60s artists haven't gotten in...
...I certainly agree with your assessment of the HoF! And why the hell did the Hall discontinue the "Early Influences" category before it could induct Wynonie Harris?! :wtf:

3. A Detroiter here. You are officially flamed. Seger belongs.
Hard to know where to begin, so I will just say that Bob Seger has been producing great rock since the '60s, and is long overdue for the Hall of Fame. 2 + 2 is on my mind.

4. I agree. Seger is far better than he generally gets credit for.
Hell, THE DISTANCE made my "100 Favorite Albums" list!

And I'm damned glad to see the Mighty Dells finally getting inducted. Christ knows they deserve it!

10. guess we'll have to agree to disagre on Seger . . .
I find his stuff very mediocre . . . and even if you consider him a good stadium rocker, I still don't think he rises to Hall of Fame caliber . . . but music appreciation is very subjective, so I respect your view . . . and I agree with your previous post about early influences . . .

17. Listen to the first Bob Seger System album.
It's true, "Like a Rock" was HORRIBLE. Then again, but the stuff the Stones have done since the late-'70s has also sucked pig ass.

The Last Heard singles, the "2 + 2 = ?" single, and the "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" LP are rock and roll classics on a par with anything by Mitch Ryder, the Rationals, or the MC5 (at least their studio work).

Okay, Seger's no Iggy. But who is?

5. I agree, although Seger probably ranks OK....but yes, many deserving
artists remain unheralded.
ZZ Top??? NAH.......

I love Jackson Browne though...

9. I kinda like Jackson Browne, too . . .
I just don't think of him as Hall of Fame material . . . it seems they're down to inducting anyone who had a hit single or a successful album sometime in the past 30 years . . . I just think the moniker "Hall of Fame" implies that inductees did something special, adn I don't think Browne qualifies . . . respect your opinion, though . . . :)

16. Ozzy refuses to be inducted and good for him.
Black Sabbath has been up a few times but Ozzy refuses to go in. He says the Hall is a joke (I agree) and that the media was never there for them when they came out and never supported them. I applaud his stance.

8. ZZ Top were cool for adding synth sequences...
...to rock a la Afterburner and Eliminator and have it still be rock and not disco. I don't see it imitated much though until like maybe now with Linkin Park and stuff.

But Bob Seger belongs. I remember him from the Bob Seger System days.

13. a few acts that deserve consideration before the current crop . . .
Edited on Fri Mar-05-04 02:14 AM by OneBlueSky
- Patti Smith
- Gram Parsons
- Roxy Muxic
- Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers
- Richard Thompson
- Leonard Cohen
- Tom Waits
- The Smiths
- The Cure
- Sonic Youth

and a whole lot of the early doo wop groups who haven't yet been tapped . . .

on edit: it just occurred to me that the E Street Band has also not been inducted . . . undoubtedly one of the great R&R bands of all time . . . should have been inducted with Bruce but since they weren't, they should get their own recognition . . .
