No sleep for me tonight! The beagle ate some unknown substance
at dog class tonight.

Our class takes place in the local Lions Club building. It's used for all kinds of events.

Tonight, just after class ended, I needed to use the restroom, so I brought the beag with me. We get in the stall and immediately she reaches back behind the toilet, and I hear her crunching on something. I got her into a sit/stay right away, but she'd already eaten whatever it was. I looked back there, and didn't see anything. What worries me is that it seems like one of those places where one might put mouse poison, if one were concerned about that--you know, around a water source.

6 years ago this month, she chewed open a bottle of 5-htp, ate about 30 pills, and ended up with serotonin syndrome. Our vet saved her through some really heroic efforts, that included sending her associate to the human hospital ER for an antidote. I know the harm that can come from eating things she shouldn't.

So, I'll be sleeping with one eye open tonight, watching for any sign that she's not well.

I love her, but sometimes I wish she could be just little less beaglish.

2. Did you ask the Lions Club folks what it might have been?
When I travel with the pups, I keep the "toss up" fluid with me, just in case.

3. There's no one from the Lions Club there when we are. We just rent
the building. I talked to the obedience instructor, and she said "Oh, I'm sure they wouldn't out rat poison in a building where they know there will be animals around." I'm not convinced, myself.

I thinking of trying to get her to drink some salt water, to bring it up. I should get some of that "toss up" stuff. What do you use? Ipecac?

5. Ipecac, yes.
It's very quick, and sometimes a life saver.

I can't see (personally) leaving rat poison where a person or animal (other than a rat) could get to it. But, that wouldn't keep me from doing just what you are in your situation.

I hope the beage is okay.

8. I wouldn't do that w/o talking to the vet first
some toxic stuff is worse when vomited because it causes further damage on the way out. I hope she's ok Critters. Those darn beagles are frustrating

9. So far, she seems okay. She's fast asleep, but breathing well,
no signs of digestive upset. I actually think that, even if it were mouse poison, it would've been a very small amount and would probably cause her stomach trouble, and maybe nothing more. But I think it would bother her to the point of coming to get me, which she does when she doesn't feel well. I don't think it would've been enough to kill her, but what it could do to her kidneys or whatever, that's what I need to watch.

For now, I'm letting her sleep, and hoping it was just some food crumb.

11. Oh, jeez. As my cousin told me, "Beagles are great dogs, but when they go
outside, their brains fall out of their noses."

Or when they go somewhere different inside as well.

Take good care of your Beagie.

13. When I was growing up, and our beagle went outside, ...
...his brains fell into his d**k. As all the half beagle puppies in our neighborhood could attest to.

15. Maybe you could contact someone from the Lions Club
tomorrow and find out if they put out any kind of poison?

If they did, and you know what it is, the vet could help. Maybe it was something else. Could it have been something to remove odors from the restroom? They might have some ideas.

I hope it was nothing dangerous. I know how you love that dog.

What kind of signs and symptoms? Where does the damage occur?

Good luck...I hope it was a benign snack.
