1. No, no, no. Bear Gryllis is by far the bigger tool, IMHO.

15. Wasn't that Man vs. Wild? Unless they both did an episode on how to
make an utter fool of yourself in the Sierra.

I laughed my ass off when I saw that one - I started with an attitude of "I spend a lot of time there, this could be useful" but about two minutes in it morphed into "Umm, what did you say?" followed by "holy crap, people die doing that!"

Apparently he spent half his time at the Pines at Bass Lake.

My great aunt Thelma lives there.

THE ENTIRE SHOW was HORRIBLE.

Aside from how to build a hut out of bark, that show was AWFUL. THE WORST.

4. Me too.
Unlike Bear Gryllis, Les Stroud is not surrounded by camera and sound crew.

Bear seems to stage much of what he does, and some of the stunts don't even make sense.

Les seems to speak to true survival techniques and challenges and doesn't seem as much to play to the camera.

He often has emergency standby people somewhere nearby but he does all of his own filming and much of the editing.

My VERY favorite outdoorsy nut is no longer with us.

Grizzly Man Timothy Treadwell, RIP

6. Les did a pretty cool urban survival series.
I only saw a couple of them, but one was a Katrina-esque situation and it actually seemed very useful.

11. Bear DOES stage his shows...
for example, he filmed in a "wilderness" area, but in actuality, he was filming about 200 feet from the freeway in California.

7. Honestly, of the "survivor" type shows, he seems to be the benchmark of what's good.
Yeah, he can be dramatic, and that probably works for the network. But, he's out there by himself living in those conditions. He's no fake from what I've seen.

8. I was forced to watch that once...
He was "surviving" in the Arctic and nearly fell over the edge of something and had to drag himself back up with all his strength.

It was very dramatic, which I think was helped by the camera crew conveniently stationed directly below where he had just gone over in order to film his flailing legs.

14. OH HO HO!
I guess I'm busted in retrospect. I posted a statement above regarding pumped up drama, and now that you said that, I realize that the show I was watching WAS Man vs. Wild.

I respectfully take it back.
