What are you like IRL?
Me? I'm an introvert. Don't get out much, don't see many people outside of work. I don't smoke, I drink a little, I eat too much. I'm heavy and - although you wouldn't know it, since it's gotten darker over the years - I am a natural blonde. I would live on the beach if it were possible; I grew up on the beach. I read as much as I can, I get through the ghastly commute with audiobooks, and, yes, the rumor is true: I love cats.

What are you like?

There you have it.

Except I smoke, don't drink, not blonde, and didn't grow up on a beach.

I eat too much and want to move to nearer the ocean.

And ironically, while I don't care much for large crowds and do well alone, my job involves working with large groups of strangers in presentations an training events.

Oh, and I love cats, other people's cats and lolcats.

Also an introvert, definitely not a social-vert. I love to be home with my dogs, my books, the computer and the TV (especially C-span and MSNBC). We spend many weekends from spring to fall showing our dogs.

I enjoy politics and worked for Obama, Kerry, and Mondale. I started working for political candidates in jr. high! :)

Been married to the same man for my entire adult life. We have two grown-up "kids".
I'm a burned-out "veteran" teacher who would love to retire, but can't because of health care.

25. In those senses?
I'm also a very shy introvert, but I go out a lot with friends to bars and things. I smoke like there's no tomorrow, drink like a fish, and eat way too much bad food. As a result, I'm a bit tubby. My hair is completely crazy, but I keep it that way, because I'm going bald and want to have some hair for as long as possible.

I want to live in a city. Right now I live in a quasi-urban environment, but it's really just a big town - 150k people. I'm thinking of buying an apartment in Prague.

I love cats and dogs, but travel and move too much to have either. I 1/2 had a dog, but my now ex-girlfriend has it, and I don't know when I'll ever see it again. People who have children don't believe me, but I love that dog as if it were my child. It's heart breaking. I cry about not seeing her (the dog) a lot.

27. My dear Bertha!
Ah, you already know about me!

But here goes, anyhow, for those who haven't met me...

I've been told that I'm more complicated IRL...I'm bolder in what I'll talk about, and yes, I do drop the occasional F-Bomb.

I tend to be decisive about what I want to do, but I'll always listen to my friends about what they want...

I can be very impatient! And, believe it or not, I have a terrible temper. I try not to let it out, though...

OTOH, I can be very sensitive and my feelings can be hurt easily, depending on my mood. Some days I'm "Peg the Conquerer" and other times I'm "Timid little Peg."

That's about it...

29. To quote a friend, i'm a narcoleptic sheepdog
Of Lyric and/or me, i'm the more extroverted. I joke around a lot, and though i can be a grouch if i haven't gotten enough sleep or am PMSing, i'm generally a pretty happy person. I rarely dress beyond casual, and because of my short-but-shaggy hair and unisex wardrobe, sometime that i get called "sir".

Oh... and unless i'm driving, i have a hard time staying awake if i sit in one place for too long. I fall asleep watching movies or TV all the time at home, and have to fight that tendency on the rare occasion the rare occasion that i go to the theater.

I like food that's bad for me and i drink too much pop (and it shows), but those are my only real vices. I don't smoke, and rarely consume more than one adult beverage at a sitting (because i have no tolerance for alcohol -- two drinks, and i'm wobbly).

I'm a natural blonde too. I like most people. I waver between introversion and extroversion - I often need alone time, home time, to recharge; other times I crave interaction with other people.

I like animals. They seem to like me. I like kids. They seem to like me. I like to laugh, and I like to make other people laugh. I'm a fast typist. I'm not always what people expect.

And yes, I am often compared IRL to Betty Crocker. :D

32. I'm shy and a little awkward. I use humor and theatricality to get over my shyness
around strangers. Around friends, I love to talk. I love intelligent and involving conversations. I get a little nervous around pretty women, and try to mask it by using good manners (in the best Southern style, learnt fr'm mah Momma. B-) ) I'm impatient and always in a hurry to get where I'm going. I'm irreverent around people with undeserved authority, and respectful of earned authority. I use self-deprecating humor a lot, and am not afraid to be openly sensitive.

I love dogs, but don't have any.

I enjoy meeting people and once we get to know each other I'm quite comfortable. I'm small, some would say 'skinny' but I wasn't always that way. I eat a lot of food but I don't / can't drink much alcohol. I'm a cheap drunk. One glass of wine and I'm done.

I have one granddaughter she's the joy of my life. I'm transplanted here from Ontario, Canada and I still can't decide if I like living in Michigan. I've met a few folks from DU and I think very highly of each of them. They are all terrific people. I wish I could spend more time irl with them all.

I like to be active, but I like quiet times, too. I'm a very fast reader and I have a quick mind. I process things quickly and get impatient often. It's one of my challenges. I'm definitely an extrovert. I can talk to anybody, anywhere. It's one of my talents. I am a great listener and I am interested in other people and what connects us. I like talking and thinking about meaning and purpose and what makes life worth living. I make a point everyday to be Grateful. I love my family. I adore my husband. I have great friends. I know I am loved. I am currently on the path toward becoming a therapist.

OK, I'll stop now. :hi:

I'm a quiet person who talks more once I get to know you. I don't like crowds, big or small. I'm content to spend my time at home with my hobbies. I am the most at peace with a camera in my hand taking photos or with headphones on listening to music. I am who I am, but not who I thought I would be at the age of 21. It has been an interesting journey getting where I am and I am finally at peace with it.

My good side: I'm very loyal to my friends. I'm kind of quiet until I get comfy around somebody, then I never STFU. I constantly try to make everything funny and sometimes succeed. I'm mostly happy go lucky and very laid back.

My bad side: God help you if you wake me up though. The Devil, himself, has cringed in the corner for waking me up. Also, when I first wake up, I must must must have a Dr Pepper, a cigarette, and something for the perpetual headaches I seem to always wake up with. After that, I'm much much better.

Most of my life I've wanted to live on the beach, but I have accepted in recent years that it's unlikely I'll ever be able to afford it. Plus, evacuating for hurricanes would be a PITA.

A little shy at first, but I will fairly quickly get used to you and open up. I get out and see people on a pretty regular basis, but I am happiest at home reading a book, playing a video game, or watching a movie. I am lazy at heart, but I've gotten pretty good over the years at ignoring the impulse to always take the easy route. I have a college degree, but I work a crappy job earning a crappy wage, and not entirely because of that laziness (note that I said "not entirely"). I am fiercely loyal to the people I love, and will defend and support them even when they make mistakes.

Oh, and I love cats, too. And dogs.

I have a weird sense of humor, too.

It's odd, cause I think I'm quite bookish. But whenever I tell people that I'm an introvert and shy in crowds, they act surprised.

62. Stereotypical middle-aged nice guy...
Stereotypical middle-aged nice guy. Three Friday nights out of four I'm at my place watching a move, reading a book or wasting time playing a PC game. The fourth Friday I'll be in the downtown area either with some friends getting some time-off from their wives or on a (ever increasingly rare) date.

Blond hair, blue eyes, a bit on the thin side, and sporting a beard that's more gray than anything else. I supervise a gaggle of twentysomethings for a modest living, I smoke cigarettes, rarely drink (just the social variety), and may on occasion smoke a joint (although I'm neither confirming nor denying that).

I live in genteel poverty and picturesque squalor. I tend not to get really excited one way or the other anymore-- my emotional peaks and troughs of my twenties have reduced themselves to nothing more than a gentle cycle. Love animals, love classic b/w movies, love jazz and classical.

I'm not too dumb or too bright. And I have the power of invisibility in crowds.

About the newest thing I can add to my resume of life is that I've got a new-found thing for the actress who plays the wife on Posh-Nosh-- very far out in left field for me considering the style of women I've been dating over the past few years...

For financial and other reasons.

Except for the current necessity of having to drag my carcass to and fro from work, I have, for all intents and purposes, crawled into a hole and pulled the top in after myself.

66. Hi Bertha
Let's see...

I'm more of an introvert than I like to admit, but with people I am comfortable with and situations I am comfortable in, then I am definitely not shy. I'm extremely opinionated, but I try not to argue with people. I'm told that I can be intense. I read voraciously, and I watch tons of movies. I have two cats and have a really hard time limiting it to just two. I try hard to be thoughtful of other people.

I'm really bad at this. Come visit Baltimore, and then you can see what I'm like IRL. :hi:

67. Asocial and loving every minute of it!
I don't go out much. If I do it's usually to see bands play live. Other than that, I really don't have a lot of fun going out to bars, other people's houses, etc. I always feel like I should be somewhere else. I'm ok if the topic of conversation is something I know and love, like hockey, sex, and black metal, but after that it's just politics, and that's always iffy with other people. I have no patience for repubs, so even trying to be social with them is a challenge. I can barely be social with people I agree with, let alone right wing smegheads.

I like the beach, but wouldn't live on it. Cape Cod was nice, but I'd rather live in the middle of the Yukon or something, like Grizzly Adams. :)

I look like the inside of a cow's fourth stomach.

I'm addicted to music. I prefer certain types, but anything will do in a pinch, from Neil Diamond to Cannibal Corpse. It's all good, except for that Brittany Janet Christina cavalcade of crap.

I'm 41, I've been married and then not married. I have cancer (thyroid, almost cured). I, too, love cats, and have a super cool one named Frisco. I love pasta, monster movies, and brunettes (lol...no offense. Blondes are perfectly fine, but there's something about brunettes that just gets me every damn time).

I want to dive with sharks, either in a cage or not, depending on the type. I'm not swimming with any damn Great Whites, but I'll watch them bite a cage right in front of my face! If I could visit Mars I would, even if it meant dying in a day or two after arriving (what a couple of days!).

I don't read as much as I used to, by my favorite authors include Kim Stanley Robinson, Kurt Vonnegut, Ed McBain, and Philip Kerr.

And that's all I got. :)

And maybe a little less serious and looser. But pretty much like you - an introvert who just likes a simple life. I do like my time with people, but I'm not a "people" person and like my time to myself.

I love music, dogs, and politics just as much as I show.

84. I think people think I'm aloof
because I'm so introverted that I often am silent in large groups. It's not that I have nothing to say, it's that I am easily overly stimulated... the more stimulated, the less I feel like talking.

The DU equivalent of that would be a thread that gets so many responses that I don't feel the need to respond.

I feel much more chatty in smaller groups.

93. I'm a real homebody. Seldom leave the house and yard except to
shop or very occasionally go to the woods to walk around.
I am a painter, work mainly in oils, and I don't have to sell anything, so I do it just to please myself. I was a member of a gallery many years ago, and really did not like the people much.(Rather hang with my dog.)
Have survived 2 heart attacks,4X bypass and a pacemaker, and really try to enjoy my life on borrowed time.
I love dogs, grow organic figs and some vegies and have several bird feeders.
I used to be a bar band musician in the '60-s and '70's, have an old Stratocaster in the living room, and play guitar, bass and a little harmonica and sing, just for fun these days - my fingers are not strong enough to play for very long - did not get my full hand strength back after surgery.
I am also a gun owner and like to go to several area ranges from time to time to shoot.
I am a veteran of the 82d Airborne Division from the late 1960's.

I love to read, play and listen to music and cook, and spend way too much time on the fucking computer, and I really don't care too much about politics - I just voted Democratic all my life.

99. Although no one believes it I am shy around people
I do not know. I feel socially awkward most of the time. I am politically active. I LOVE scooters and miss riding since my accident in October. I've never had a huge coterie of friends but rather just a few really close ones. One finds out who is a real friend following an accident or surgery.

When I was on short term disability I did not mind not leaving my apartment. I had food, magazines, books and the Internet and in December got cable. When I returned to work in January my co-workers could not believe I didn't get bored being at home.

I don't drink and have never been drunk. I'm a Deadhead and Phish Head and have never done drugs (contrary to a stereotype). I do like food, though. I also LOVE Mountain Dew, although during the week I have only one a day.

I'm irreverent, fatalistic, I talk too loud, say things I don't mean when I'm angry (for which I apologize frequently) occasionally have a deep insightful thought (that I can't quite vocalize in any way that can be understood) have gotten used to a lot of blank stares, usually have 3 days worth of beard on my face...

The list goes on and on.
