What is your earworm on this Friday?
Mine:

Hold you in my arms - Ray Lamontagne - Trouble

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=406Se3xPTqQ

When you came to me with your bad dreams and your fears
It was easy to see that you'd been crying
Seems like everywhere you turn catastrophe it reigns
But who really profits from the dying
I could hold you in my arms
I could hold you forever
I could hold you in my arms
I could hold you in my arms forever

When you kissed my lips with my mouth so full of questions
It's my worried mind that you quiet
Place your hands on my face
Close my eyes and say
Love is a poor man's food
Don't prophesize
I could hold you in my arms
I could hold you forever
And I could hold you in my arms
I could hold you forever

So now we see how it is
This fist begets the spear
Weapons of war
Symptoms of madness
Don't let your eyes refuse to see
Don't let your ears refuse to hear
Or you ain't never going to shake this sense of sadness
I could hold you in my arms
I could hold on forever
And I could hold you in my arms
I could hold forever

17. Because I'm a haole and I lived in Hawai'i
You know it's Hawaiian, yeah? Like in Aloha. Alo-HA, ha is the breath of life. Hawaiian is an oral language that couldn't be written down until the missionaries anglicized it.

Haole used to mean any foreigner, the Hawaiian's thought the foreigners were soulless because they couldn't recite their family's lineage. It's why most Hawaiian words are so long because each word tells a long story and is particular to different events.

It's also an ethnic slur, but most white people don't really care and have reclaimed it like the n-word.

24. Another intrepretation is that it means "divine"
Edited on Fri Jan-23-09 07:25 PM by arcadian
It was then that the word haole meant "who-do-not-breathe". In fact, it was used to describe the dead. Sometimes with the truly physical meaning, other times in a more subtle spiritual sense. Often, the two perspectives were mixed together, such as to describe a ghost, or a god.

23. You might want to research it further, too, arcadian:
The word haole existed before the arrival of Captain Cook. It's a very old word that appears in a story about the demigod Kamapua'a. "He haole nui, maka 'alohilohi." Also, the word does not mean without breath. The word ha'ole is a different word entirely.

He mau haole paha na kanaka e heluhelu nei i ka unuhi a'u i kakau ai.
Some foreigners are probably the people who are reading the translation I wrote.

26. True, I just posted that upthread.
Hope I didn't upset you. I don't mind it and people use it all the time. It's definitely a Hawaiian/Local cultural thing. Keep it.

27. Thanks
I had no idea people were calling me an "n-word" type slur. I knew it was a slur, but if I had known... if I had known exactly how offensive it was I wouldn't have used it.

Plus I just feel like crap today.

Sorry I got so upset.

28. I wouldn't say it's on a par with the n-word.
It really isn't offensive. It's become kind of a pet name. I was just joking around when I said the "soulless' thing. Most people just assume that haole means "white" which it pretty much does in modern times. Locals call white haoles, whites call whites haoles, it's no biggie. Like I said, I'm just a big, dumb, stupid haole myself. :D

12. Steely Dan, "The Royal Scam"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRjItDLnAwc

And they wandered in
From the city of St. John
Without a dime
Wearing coats that shined
Both red and green
Colors from their sunny island
From their boats of iron
They looked upon the promised land
Where surely life was sweet
On the rising tide
To New York City
Did they ride into the street

See the glory
Of the royal scam

They are hounded down
To the bottom of a bad town
Amid the ruins
Where they learn to fear
An angry race of fallen kings
Their dark companions
While the memory of
Their southern sky was clouded by
A savage winter
Every patron saint
Hung on the wall, shared the room
With twenty sinners

See the glory
Of the royal scam

By the blackened wall
He does it all
He thinks he's died and gone to heaven
Now the tale is told
By the old man back home
He reads the letter
How they are paid in gold
Just to babble in the back room
All night and waste their time
And they wandered in
From the city of St. John without a dime

See the glory
Of the royal scam

18. I had some driving to do today, so I heard my Steely Dan mix CD twice, beginning to end:
1). Do It Again
2). Reelin' In The Years
3). Show Biz Kids
4). The Boston Rag
5). Rikki Don't Lose That Number
6). Pretzel Logic
7). Black Friday
8). Bad Sneakers
9). Doctor Wu
10). Any World (That I'm Welcome To)
11). Don't Take Me Alive
12). The Royal Scam
13). Deacon Blues
14). Josie

I've obviously left a few "fan favorites" off, like "Kid Charelmagne," and I didn't have room for anything from "Gaucho," but these 14 tracks are my "Desert Island Dan."

I have all of the "original" albums, ending with "Gaucho" (none of the "reunion" stuff) and like them all for different reasons, but my favorite individual album has got to be "Katy Lied." It also features the greatest singing of Michael McDonald's career, period.

15. Me And Bobby McGee -- Kris Kristofferson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8ZkkKfg_Rw

Busted flat in baton rouge, headin for the trains,
Feelin nearly faded as my jeans.
Bobby thumbed a diesel down just before it rained,
Took us all the way to new orleans.
Took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana
And was blowin sad while bobby sang the blues,
With them windshield wipers slappin time and
Bobby clappin hands we finally sang up every song
That driver knew.

Freedoms just another word for nothin left to lose,
And nothin aint worth nothin but its free,
Feelin good was easy, lord, when bobby sang the blues,
And buddy, that was good enough for me,
Good enough for me and my bobby mcgee.

From the coalmines of kentucky to the california sun,
Bobby shared the secrets of my soul,
Standin right beside me through everythin I done,
And every night she kept me from the cold.
The somewhere near salinas, lord, I let her slip away,
She was lookin for the love I hope shell find,
Well Id trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday,
Holdin bobbys body close to mine.

Freedoms just another word for nothin left to lose,
And nothin left was all she left to me,
Feelin good was easy, lord, when bobby sang the blues,
And buddy, that was good enough for me.
Good enough for me and bobby mcgee.

30. This one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckwn7anal74

I gave a letter to the postman
he put it his sack.
bright and early next morning,
he brought my letter back.
she wrote upon it:
return to sender, address unknown.
no such number, no such zone.
we had a quarrel, a lover's spat
i write i'm sorry but my letter keeps coming back.
so then i dropped it in the mailbox
and sent it special d.
bright and early next morning
it came right back to me.
she wrote upon it:
return to sender, address unknown.
no such number, no such zone.
this time i'm gonna take it myself
and put it right in her hand.
and if it comes back the very next day
then i'll understand the writing on it
return to sender, address unknown.
no such person, no such zone...
