One Gripe About The DVD Movie Format...
DVD's have such an incredible dynamic range (audible difference between the quietest parts and the loudest parts at any given volume level) that there is no way to quietly watch a movie and still be able to hear all of the dialog. I find the overall presentation on most modern films to be a whole lot louder than I ever really want to hear it, to be honest.

I often wonder what my neighbors think of the machine guns and live artillery fire in my living room at 3:00AM, though they have never said a word to me about it.

1. Get a compressor
They're electronic audio gadgets.

Sometimes amps have them built in.

Check around, you can get a low-end compressor for well under $100.
