Our story to date: We had two dogs, Jack who was a large mixed hound who'd been left in my car as a tiny puppy and Guinness who is a Beagle/Shepherd mix. Guinness followed Jack around and looked to him for instructions on how to act. Jack died suddenly leaving Guinness without a buddy.
We went to the local shelter and saw some beautiful Labradors, but Guinness wasn't having anything to do with them. The shelter recommended we get a puppy.
We got a line on a Pomeranian mix from a rescue group. My husband had hoped for a Pomeranian mix since that's what his family had when he was in high school.
The rescue group operated out of a home. We took Guinness with us, and he was a little leery of the new dog and even snapped at him. Then the Foster mother apologetically tried what should have been obvious to us: she put the new dog's butt up to Guinness's nose. After that, all was well. Guinness even started wandering around the house a little.
The new dog is a beautiful little fellow about 20 lbs and covered with silky, jet black fur. We debated a series of names: Blackie, Khan, Midnight, Raven, Mystique. Then my daughter suggested Puck.
I pointed out that I didn't want to
ever end up calling "Puck! Come here, Puck!"
So, we are going with Pooka.(

He and Guinness have been hanging out near each other today. From time to time one of them tries a tentative growl. Pooka hasn't done any barking yet, so I think he's still trying to get a feel for the place. He hasn't figured out the doggy door yet.
The old yellow cat snarled at Pooka, then ignored him. The little cat is staying in high places and the bitey cat is walking around with its tail fluffed to 3 times its normal size.
