I was explaining to the kids, in the children's sermon today, Dr. King's work--nonviolent social change, fighting racism, etc. Little 4 yo Karen says "So, not fighting and being nice to everyone...isn't that just using good manners?" Me: Yeah, it is using good manners.

Why can't we all just use good manners?

1. It is so much more than just using good manners.

It's using your good manners conspicuously in ways that really show what savages your opponents are in comparison. It's shaming your opponents in front of everyone else so that they are forced to back down.

Simply having good manners, if nobody sees, is a good way to get stepped on. People have to see what is happening. There has to be the comparison of what you are doing versus what they are doing.

But for small kids, that is definitely a good start to the discussion. :)

2. She got the "not fighting and being nice to everyone" part.

That's more than can be said for half the DUers in GDP! :)
