Will spicy food hurt dogs or cats?

I'm eating some chicken tortilla soup and my cat is driving me nuts. He wants some.

11. Tell that to my curry-lovin' cat! He's all about the Thai food.

Why, I have NO idea. He begs until I give him some (usually curried chicken).

He eats it in a delicate manner due to it's hotness, and then contentedly drinks some water, clearly pleased with his unusual meal.

If he suffers any ill effects, I have never noticed them.

Oh, and he also begs for and loves mexican-style burracho beans laced with jalapeno. :shrug:

14. My late great Ryno girl loved chicken curry.

I had to eat it out rather than bring it home or make it. Otherwise, she was in my face and plate. BTW, her nickname was "Miss Bossy." She ruled the roost around here.

Cats love tortilla soup. Give him a side wasabi and he will do your bidding, no matter how crazy the request.

6. about a week ago

my tiny, little chihuahua had the farts and I tossed her off the couch and made her sit all by herself... as far away as I could keep her from me. She kept sneaking back and farting right next to me... I don't remember what she had been eating but whatever it was made her smell like a giant pile of flaming monkey crap.

9. One of my doxies gets horrible farts sometimes.

The vet said to give him a little yogurt now and then -- the kind with lots of active enzymes. She also suggested changing his food -- she said Nutro, which I thought was good food, could be the culprit. She recommended switching them to Iams or Science Diet. I've been mixing Nutro with Blue Buffalo. She's okay with the BB, not the Nutro.

16. Blue Buffalo is MUCH higher quality than Iams or Science Diet

I'd switch her over totally to the Blue Buffalo. I'm leery of Nutro after the food recall. My IBS cat never had IBS problems until after the Nutro recall.

Vets recommend Iams and Science Diet, because they try to buy over vets.

5. You don't want to know

What the effect of an entire Krystal "Cheezinator" meal is on the digestive system of a dog. A "Cheezinator" is five small cheeseburgers and an order of chili fries. It supplies both lunch and dinner for one person. I put it down on the couch while I went looking for some warm socks, and when I came back there was just a pile of shredded paper and a dog with a happy grin on her face.

But the next day - oy!

13. My Sunday Girl has IBD and I have to fight her over

quite a few different foods she has always loved, namely chili, veggie soup, chicken and rice (with a dollop of Red Hot sauce), and home cooked spaghetti sauce. Life's gotta suck without good food.

17. My moosedog once got into my pepper patch

He ate a habanero plant and two Thai bird pepper plants-about 80 peppers in all. Didn't faze him a bit-he liked it.

18. My vet said dogs don't have taste receptors for spiciness.

And thus could eat too much too fast and possibly damage their digestive system. Not sure about cats. Best to err on side of caution with these things, although honestly what passes for spicy in this country is pretty weaksauce.
