K is not doing homework today
Because I refuse.

She has done 8 HOURS of homework since Monday. I am so fucking done.

I will NOT have another week like this, I will yank her out of school and home school her if I need to.

1. My dear KitchenWitch!
I don't know what is standard for kids her age these days, but that does seem excessive...

Hang on, sweetie...

2. That's bullcrap
Kids at that age should have an hour-- maybe an hour and a half TOPS-- per night.

Sounds like another case of a school trying to do "more with less".

3. I swear, it'd probably be easier.
It it takes more than 4 hours a day of actual instructional time (I know schools have to add in lunch and recess and various organizing stuff and that adds up) to impart the necessary basics to a kid that age, you're doing it wrong. There really shouldn't be any homework except classwork she didn't quite finish and the occasional special project.

8. She's 1st grade, right?
When I taught First, kids had about 20 minutes a night, 30 max, and mostly it was for different Spelling practices, and reading with parent and by self. Occasionally sent home a new Math concept to reinforce, but was always aware that if I were to overload the kids at that age with homework, pretty soon they would grow to hate school.

Our basic rule of thumb at the elementary level level was 20 min/grade level, so 2nd graders would have 30-40 minutes a night, and so on.

Have you talked with the principal about this overkill on homework?

  for you and K

13. Good luck with the meeting.
That is way too many hours of homework for children in that grade.

14. That amount of homework for a 1st Grader is beyond excessive. It borders of abusive IMO.
In my experience most homework is worthless BS busy-work. Over-reliance on homework is an indicator of a worthless teacher.

And teachers caught giving out more work as collective punishment for a few misbehaving kids should be fired.
