Today's Wrong Number Report
For several months we periodically get calls for PAAR, which is a Pittsburgh area rape crisis center. Apparently there is some confusion at 411 information and they keep handing out our number instead of the toll-free hotline for PAAR.

So today, we get 4 calls in a row from the same person. I didn't answer the first three assuming it was for my wife $'s business. My wife picked up the phone on the fourth call and sadly explained we were not the hotline. We felt terrible because this person obvously wanted help, so I looked up PAAR on the web and called them. The director called me back and I explained the issue. She was profoundly sorry, thanked me for calling, and promised to look into how they are listed so people would no longer be calling us.

An hour later, my wife picks up the phone. I hear her adamantly explaining we are NOT Meals On Wheels...

Later,
JM

1. My Parents have ...
a number that is similiar to Dollywood (Dolly Pardons theme park ?). The number is the same, except for a single digit in the area code.

We have a number that is similiar to a local hotel (we get a call about once per month. I have been tempted to take a reservation, but I can not bring myself to do it.

You did the right thing.

Cheers
Drifter

5. Stuff like this...
...I do the right thing.

I do, however take reservations, especially for the window seats, if the person is absolutely adamant they have the right number or they call back repeatedly despite my telling them they have the wrong number.

2. You might want to put the crisis center # by your phone.
Just a thought.

:D

3. Already done.
As a matter of fact, I offered the number off the caller ID, but they said they could not do that due to confidentiality rules.

Later,
JM

6. Our old phone number was only one digit different than
the number for BC Ferries. For years I always gave out the schedule cuz usually that was all people wanted. I should havew been on their payroll!

7. My best friend and wrong numbers
<phone rings> Hello?

<young male voice> Is this Blockbuster?

<Anita now in her best Minnisota accent> Yah it is, what can I do ya for?

<young male> Do you have "The Devil's Advocate"?

<Anita> Oh, I don't think you should be watching some movie about the Devil. How about "All Dogs Go To Heaven"?

<young male> What the fuck?

<Anita> Listen to your filthy talk. You kiss your mom with that mouth.

<click>

I wish I had a phone number that was a couple of numbers off a video store.

8. LMAO...
One of my favorites was from "Ruthless People"

"I'm sorry. Diane can't come to the phone right now. She's got my
d!ck in her mouth...God I love wrong numbers!" Danny Devito

9. AAA
The local AAA office phone and my residential phone are nearly the same number (only two digits switched)

Hence, I get a lot of calls from stranded motorists. If I am home I answer and tell them the correct number (hey, I try to help people out when I can) but man, I am getting sick of people pissed AT ME because I can't send them a tow truck or transfer their call.

Another good one last week: on the answering machine "Congratulations on the baby! We can't wait to see you!" *more good wishes and baby talk*
We have no baby, and now someone with a baby has no message : )

10. Last Friday night and early Saturday morning,
(2:30 AM or so), I got TWO phone calls on my cell phone for someone named Michelle. That is not my name. I think the calls were from two different guys, too. (Two different caller-ID numbers). Sounds like some woman in the Pittsburgh area named Michelle was very much desired last weekend!!

Michelle, here's to you! :toast:

11. Funny...
...I used to get email like that, but they were from a girlfriend boyfriend team. My address was 1 digit off from his. They finally got the clue when I started forwarding her mail to him with comments...Pretty x-rated stuff too.

12. When I was young, we had LOTS of troubles with wrong numbers.
It took us a long time to figure out why, because there was no real pattern.

Back then, we had 7 digit dialing, and our phone number was 647-2164. What would happen is people would dial (yes, dial phones) 647-2, then realize they had dialed the 2 wrong, press down on the hang-up button briefly, and dial 64 again. Well, pressing down briefly on the hangup button was the same as dialing one, so we would get the calls for everyone that dialed the first 3 numbers correctly, then made a mistake. It was a pain.

Don't think that happens with touch-tone though.
