Embarrassing question about neutered dogs.

I really love my dog, but I can't help but wonder something. He was neutered before I adopted him from the shelter. Is it normal that he never seems to get erect, or rub up against anything? Is this normal and to be expected?

If a male dog has that part of his anatomy removed, does that "desire" just vanish? I feel kind of bad for him, if that is the case.

Do male dogs who undergo that operation just not have any sexual feelings at all? I should know this, because I used to volunteer five days a week at a dog shelter, but the truth is I have no clue.

I depends on WHEN you get them neutered a lot of times. The younger they were neutered, generally, the less of that they do. Then again, when I groomed dogs, I saw itty bitty baby puppies trying to hump everything that moved. I'm no expert, but I think it depends on the dog.

2. That is completely normal.

The neutering eliminates testosterone production. No more desire. They may still try to "hump" other dogs, but that a dominance thing, not a sexual thing.

He just lacks that internal drive totally. Knowing what trouble the sexual drive can get us into, I envy rather than pity him.

3. Neutering removes most of the hormones that make them interested in such things.

Those hormones are largely secreted by the testes, which is what's removed in neutering. So, he's probably not feeling much of that, but he's probably not missing it, either. Neutering removes the stress of wanting to hump things. So, it's not a bad thing over all.

I grew up with an intact male dog, who was just a bundle of "desire". Having since lived with a neutered male, I can tell you the neutered male seemed more content. Or at least less stressed.

8. Yep, pretty much.

We had a male German Shepherd who became VERY aggressive to friends and family at about two years old.
We loved the dog, but he had become an unacceptable threat.
I actually sent him to a doggy shrink.
Verdict: He's a STRONG Alpha male and he's challenging YOU (me) for pack leadership.
whew.

We had him neutered.
Good doggy from then on.
I still miss Max.

every single night.
He was neutered before I got him at nine weeks of age, (I have all his papers, says he was neutered when he was only six weeks old).
He's four years old now.

My current dog was neutered a few weeks ago (he is 8 months old) and he still humps other dogs. But that could be play or dominance as well as sex to him. He's no more likely to hump a female than a male as far as I can tell.

My previous dog was neutered when he was about 5 months old and he rarely humped anything. His personality was fairly submissive.

So I think it may depend on the personality of the dog as well as how young they were neutered.
