God dammit! Why can't I just DO it! I'm gaining weight
and I feel powerless.

I have several pinpoint oxfords from Land's End, and they fit just fine. That's fit in the past tense. They're gapping. !!! Fuck.

I know a lot of things to do to get it under control and even to lose weight. I've done it before. I must do it again.

Yet I eat at will. I make bad choices. I don't cook. I don't plan. And I'm not working out.

:banghead:

Say whatever you like. I don't think I'm looking for any specific type of response.

I just need to rant.

I know this is a stupid question, but have you talked to your doctor/a nutritionist? It might help.

4. Oh, honey . . .
Not a stupid question at all, but I daresay I know it all. I was dx 2 1/2 years ago w/ diabetes. Within four months I had lost 35 pounds. I have been through my doctor's intensive diabetes "training" classes as well as a 12-week weight loss class. I know my nutrition inside and out. I know how to eat "for" diabetes. I know the heart rate I must maintain and for how long in order to get an effective cardio workout.

So again I say :banghead:

I really do appreciate your support.

12. I figured.
most of us who have weight issues do indeed know it all. Or at least all there is to know at this point in medical research history.

It just sucks that we have to deal with it.

3. Aw.
I put on a good bit over the holidays. Ate whatever I wanted and didn't work out once (I meant to but slipped into a bit of a depression). Not working out is the killer for me... cause it actually makes you more energized so it's easier the next time... but once you stop, it again becomes hard to get started again because you feel like you have no energy.

Good luck... I'm right there with you. :pals:

5. There's only about a thousand or so reasons why some people will ALWAY battle their weight
To pinpoint which one is in play in your case would take some pretty significant expertise.

I battle too, despite bariatric surgery.

I can't begin to tell you what's going to work for you, but I will say that no matter your size/weight, try to stay active. Keeping your heart and lungs healthy will be beneficial no matter what the scale says.

9. "try to stay active"
That seems like the only thing I can do right now, and it doesn't mean going to the gym. Right now it means getting up to walk across the office rather than calling or emailing someone. It's little but it's something.

7. My dear Bertha...
Ranting is good...

How can I help? I've been where you are, and it's tough...

You have to mentally decide that now is the time...

Something has to snap.

And then you're ready.

You have to change how you live, and once you figure out how to do that, you'll be on the right track.

Hang in there! You WILL do it...

10. I had two good snaps
One 2 1/2 years ago, and one in June. They're worn out. I need tighter elastic. Hell, I need a bungee cord to break and smack me in the ass. Wait a minute . . . that would only swell my ass, the last thing I need. I can see it now: asking Mrs. V., "does my butt look swollen?"

11. this is from an inspirational /motivational/informative e-mail newletter I get
Control Over Cravings

• Have 5 grams of Glutamine Powder 4x a day

When you experience a craving, it’s because your brain wants sugar, and it wants it as soon as possible! Because glutamine is an alternate source of glucose available to the brain, it can eliminate cravings for sugar, alcohol or other foods quickly - often within minutes.

Glutamine is considered a non-essential amino acid, but under extreme stress, we need more of it than we can produce. Would you think that carrying extra weight, the economy, our food supply and anything else you can think of warrants the condition “stress”?

Glutamine plays a role in digestion, specifically helping your body repair the lining of your intestines and can reduce or reverse leaky gut syndrome. You don’t even need to know what leaky gut syndrome is to improve it, just take glutamine and sit back.

Glutamine is part of any “live longer” and have “quality of life” program.

Glutamine is a pre-cursor to our master antioxidant and detoxifier “Glutathione”. Having MORE glutathione in your body is a very good thing, it's something you want to have happen. To say "glutamine is a pre-cursor" means Glutathione needs Glutamine before it can be created.

Glutamine is also a very important amino acid when it comes to anything muscle related. Repair of muscle, recovery of muscle tissue, building more muscle, muscle wasting etc. It’s involved in that it helps with nitrogen balance and of course, the stress part. If you’re exercising, a key time to consume Glutamine is right after training in the locker room before you shower.

Where To Get Glutamine

You can get Glutamine at any bodybuilding supplement store, in any number of sizes. I buy it by the 1.6 KG container and have it on my shelf in the kitchen and a smaller container in my gym bag.

I DO NOT recommend GNC as I find them to be quite overpriced.

In Canada, I recommend http://www.supplementscanada.com . I’ve shopped at their physical office for over 15 years and right now it’s about $75 for a 1.6 KG tub.

Because of supplement laws in different countries, most online dealerships will not send supplements across borders.

In the US, you might go here:

http://wholesalesupplementstore.com/glutaminepowder-1000grams-.html

Do your own due diligence and shop around.

Also, when you walk into the supplement store, there will be a lot of fancy bottles of stuff, whey protein, pills and potions. Walk up to the counter, ask for Glutamine, get it in powder form, pay for it and walk out with nothing else.

I use Ultimate Nutrition brand Glutamine, the 1.6 KG size, but I would trust Pro Lab or EAS as well.

 Is there something good you could treat yourself to for making good food choices? New music? Yummy smelly things? Stuff like that?

Hugs for you, Bertha. I'd lend you my neurosis if it'd help, but it ends up leaving you feeling powerless the other direction, which is no good, either. Have you considered seeing a naturopathic doc? The glutamine suggestion above brings it to mind. Sometimes they are able to ferret out other helpful things!

on edit: damned typo that I didn't see until it was already posting.

It's tough. I recently hit an all-time high myself. I don't feel good about it. Are you tracking your food on The Daily Plate at Livestrong? I just joined a few days ago and it looks good. Also I'm hoping my new computer-treadmill will help:

"Fall down seven times, stand up eight." Sometimes I think that's all my life is, me failing and trying and trying and trying again! :)

21. Bertha - I'm gonna call it as I see it.....
I'm 5'3" and was up to almost 280 lbs. I had dieted my way up, trying to lose and then regaining what I lost and more. I tried every diet and every program you can imagine and nothing would work. I finally just gave up.

3 years ago, I invested in myself and saved my life. I went to Hermosillo, MX to Dr. Gilberto Ungson and had Duodenal Switch surgery. I lost over 130 lbs. and am the happiest and healthiest I have ever been. The cost for surgery, hotel, flight was about $13,000.00. It was the best money I have ever spent and I'd do it again every year if I had to.

Food addiction is as real as alcoholism or drug addiction. The bad thing is you can't go cold turkey, you HAVE to eat to survive so you are continually thrown back into the addiction.
Living with obesity is dying the "death by a thousand cuts" every day. The little and not so little indignities we suffer on a daily basis are horrible. The insulting looks, not being able to get in and out of the car easily, having your sweaters ruined because your stomach is up against the steering wheel, getting to big to easily clean yourself after going to the bathroom, trying to get into a booth at a restaurant or being faced with a tiny chair to sit in that you are terrified is going to collapse under you.

You don't mention your weight, and hopefully you aren't at the point of morbid obesity yet, but if you are, consider the surgical option. It's worth it.

If not, hang in there - you have my sympathy - it's living hell to be addicted to food.

30. If it makes you feel any better, I'm struggling with the same sort of thing
Over the summer, I broke my ankle and wrist and ended up losing about 25 pounds (due to a combination of anesthetics, Vicodin, hospital food, and muscle mass lost from not being able to move around). Which was kind of awesome, but the fact is that I gained about 30 pounds in my last semester of college alone, so I'm not even really back to where I started yet. And "where I started" is somewhere around 40-50 pounds overweight anyway...so I have a lot of work to do. I was doing all right for a while - physical therapy helped me to get a little more active, but then I was released from PT and got kind of lazy again. Then Christmas came, and not only did I overeat then, but my dad got a dessert cookbook and I've been testing several of the recipes during the day (I'm currently unemployed, so I have a lot of time on my hands). So yeah, I know where you're coming from, and it's no fun at all. Here's hoping we'll both be able to get back in gear and get healthy again! :pals: :hi:

http://www.flowyogacenter.com/flow/focus_SunSalutations.html

Scroll down to the diagram. Pay attention to the breathing. This takes less than 30 seconds or you can extend it to a minute. Do it before breakfast, you will have it memorized in a very short time. Basically once you get to downward/upward/downward dog, you are just doing the first 4 positions in reverse. Just go through the motions at first if you need to, that will propel you into doing it each day. It will help you with energy and circulation, plus. You deserve to feel good about your body.
