IQ test angst.
So, I found out the results of my latest IQ test. Yipee.

My verbal IQ is very high. At the high end of the "very superior" range.

My non-verbal IQ is much lower.

They're not supposed to calculate the full-scale because the results are so far apart, but if I average them, it comes out as above average, but not gifted. (This is all based on my own research...ha.)

I was supposedly gifted. Put in a gifted program from the age of 9. Whenever I had a hard time doing something, I was told that was because I wasn't trying hard enough.

And now, apparently, I'm not even that smart. I'm also socially inept and hideously uncoordinated, with hardly any special talents to speak of, so it's not like I can even compensate. I just feel like...a massive failure. I'm a fairly good writer, but that's about it.

Sorry to keep posting wank/whininess/emo all over the boards. I just need to vent.

1. Don't be wedded to these tests.
Edited on Wed Jan-07-09 10:06 PM by turtlensue
They aren't that accurate. Anyone who has interacted with you on the board knows that this phrase "I'm not even that smart" is total bullshit. You are a very intelligent person! And as for special talents? WTF? You are a driven young woman who stands up for her rights as a minority an is both politically astute and active.
Give yourself a break won't you?

3. Isn't the whole point of Gifted classes to make the smart kids have to actually work for it?
Edited on Wed Jan-07-09 11:33 PM by DarkTirade
Seriously, I think the reason I try to make it a point to keep up with your posts is mainly 'cause you kinda remind me of me when I was your age. Only a little less cynical. I think that's just 'cause I grew up in the 90s though. :P And while I may be more than just a little scatterbrained and spread thin with various nonverbal stuff, I still manage. :)

*edit* Also, one of the tricks I use to make the verbal abilities help cover the other ones is that because I read so damn much, I end up knowing a little bit about a lot of things. And sometimes little tidbits of knowledge will help compensate for anything else you'll need. Knowing how a math problem works before the rest of the class does will compensate for a lack of natural ability in math. Ect.

4. Do you want to know what IQ tests test?
They test how well you take IQ tests. That's it.

That's not to say that you aren't smart--it simply means that you shouldn't give the tests any more credit than you think is justified.

5. I agree
I blew them away all through school and yet.. maintained a D average in High School.

I made a lot of money running scams and usually was only at school 2 days a week. I guess thats where I used my gift :D

:hi:

6. I was sentenced to the Gifted program at age seven
Every semester (or "marking period," as they were called) thereafter, I had to deal with "we expect better performance from a Gifted student." To their credit, my parents never subscribed to this view, but I heard it often enough in school to make me say "fuck it" to the whole damn thing.

8. lol
I was in those classes because they got to go on cool field trips. I did real well until that stopped and said, "fuck this crap. I wanna drive a truck."

11. I was the opposite of you
They refused to put me in the gifted classes because my grades weren't good. My mom maintained it was because I was bored..and considering that I really really scored high on every test they gave me AND when I was able to put MYSELF in gifted programs my grades shot up..I think she was right.
The other odd thing about denying me gifted classes was that my reading skills were so more advanced than my classmates (I taught myself at 3 to read) that in 2nd grade I had a special reading class all on my own! :eyes:

9. What a good girl
;)

We've got these chains hanging around our necks.
People wanna strangle us with them before we take our first breath

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz8AvY2zy7s

When I was born
They looked at me and said
What a good boy
What a smart boy
What a strong boy

And when you were born
They looked at you and said
What a good girl
What a smart girl
What a pretty girl

We've got these chains
Hanging round our necks
People wanna strangle us with them
Before we take our first breath
Afraid of change
Afraid of staying the same
When temptation calls
We just look away

This name is the hairshirt I wear
And this hairshirt is woven from your brown hair
This song is the cross that I bear
Bear with me
Bear with me
Bear with me
Be with me tonight
I know that it isn't right
But be with me tonight

I go to school
I write exams
If I pass if I fail if I drop out
Does anyone give a damn

And if I do
They'll soon forget
'Cause it won't take much for me
To show my life ain't over yet

I wake up scared
I wake up strange
I wake up wondering if anything in my life
Is ever gonna change
I wake up scared
I wake up strange
And everything around me stays the same

It's the hairshirt I wear
And this hairshirt is woven
It's woven from your brown hair
This song is the cross that I bear
Bear with me
Bear with me
Bear with me
Be with me tonight
I know that it isn't right
But be with me tonight

I couldn't tell you
I was wrong
Chickened out grabbed a pen and a paper
Sat down and I wrote this song

I couldn't tell you
That you were right
So instead I looked in the mirror
Watched TV laid awake all night

We've got these chains
Hanging round our necks
People wanna strangle us with them
Before we take our first breath
Afraid of change
Afraid of staying the same
When temptation calls…

This name is the hairshirt I wear
And this hairshirt is woven from
It's woven from
It's woven from hair
This song is the cross that I bear
Bear with me
Bear with me
Bear with me
Be with me tonight

And when I was born
They looked at me and said
What a good boy
What a smart boy
What a strong boy

And when you were born
They looked at you and said
What a good girl
What a smart girl
What a pretty girl

12. people are more than the results of their IQ ranges... or various diagnoses

It's probably best to think of the whole thing in terms of strengths and challenges. Focus on your strengths and work on your challenges.
