yep. Here we go again. I just paid Lelapin's tuition and the engine light came on in my car today and my job was eliminated.

I have no idea where to go from here. I really don't want to see the sun tomorrow.

If I move back today, I might, just might have $$ enough to move back but I have no job and no place to live. I don't know what to do.

Then there's the lease thing. And the cats. Damn.

11. My Attitude About Losing A Job Has Always Been...
Fuck it, I was looking for a job when I found this one. Seriously, don't get down on yourself. You'll probably find a job you like better that pays more.

About your engine light, disconnect your battery cable, leave it off for a few seconds and reconnect it. It could reset the sensor that triggered the light.

54. Wished there was something I could do to help you out
I had a dream that I lost my job and woke up. But who is to know how long my job will be there, either? It all depends on a paper mill that I provide power and steam to, and they shut down for economical reasons for a week. What a fiasco, when we started back up, everything was frozen. I am also going to online school and making house payments. If I lose this job, there might not be anything in my field in the area. So, I hear ya. I do hope that something good happens to you soon. I got tired of starting over, too. I am too old to do it too many more times. Best of luck to you, my dearest!

12. You can probably get away with ignoring the engine light for awhile. Most of the time, it has to do
with emissions. Put it at the bottom of your worry list. I'm sorry everything else has happened.

28. First thing to check re: the engine light is the Gas Tank Cap. If it is loose, or
is missing a spring, or has come off altogether, it will trigger the engine light. This happened to my daughter and to me. Total cost to straighten out: for me about $12.00, for her about $20.

30. I'll check it this evening.
If not, there's a driving sequence you have to follow to see if you can reset it (so says the owner's manual) It's a 2000 Taurus with 82,000 on it.

41. Hugs, there there...
It's probably just a wonky sensor, especially if the car is still driving. I have had a '89 Taurus and a '99 Sable (same car, essentially) and the O2 sensor failed on them both. Quite recently, on the Sable with 135,000 miles on it. It's the only thing that's ever made the check engine light come on in either car and my mechanic Dad says it's very common. Cost for the part: $12. And the bonus is that replacing the part made my gas mileage shoot up...

Some auto parts stores will "run the codes" on your car for free. AAMCO says they do it, ymmv of course.

Hugs and best wishes!

55. I ignore those pesky engine lights and eventually, they go away
I have a driveway full of old cars---one of them doesn't even have that engine light thingy (1972 Buick Riviera Boat tail). Usually, it means that your oxygen sensor is out of whack. I got some "Guaranteed to Pass Emissions" stuff and never saw the engine light again. You just put it in with your gas. Shit ye not. I am the authority on old junker cars and keeping them on the road. I have nothing newer than 1992. Just call me the Rustbucket Queen...

“The deep root of failure in our lives is to think, 'Oh how useless and powerless I am.' It is essential to think strongly and forcefully, 'I can do it,' without boasting or fretting.”
~Tenzin Gyatso, The 14th Dalai Lama quotes (Dalai Lama, b.1935)

It's a job... there are others. You have a beautiful daughter who is healthy and safe. You have friends who will help you if you let them and family who loves you.

Please count your blessings and, as Monty Python would say... ALWAYS look on the bright side of life. It could be FAR worse.

They were moving tech support to India!

Six weeks later he had a job that paid better, has his own office (with a window) and enjoys the work
more.

Please, don't get down. You are due for some good luck. You know DU'ers will do anything to help you.

77. Every time I got a better job, it was in February/March timeframe -
And those years always started out the same as yours has seemed to this year. The only times I've lost real jobs to layoff was always in the Sept - January timeframe when funding gets questionable.

You'll do good, it's just that many companies start reshuffling their personnel the beginning of the new year.

If you're in IT or in technology research, or just a good computer person in general, send me a PM with your specialty and the area you live in at this moment, I can see if my company is hiring in that area. If nothing else, we are reasonably ethical, have good family-oriented bennies and usually livable wages (and our Vanguard run 401K system hasn't tanked too terribly this last go-round - only around 10%), and since it's primarily employee owned, the company doesn't like to fire people.

Good luck, and at least you got the tuition out of the way. And everyone up above is probably right - if you don't actually see, hear, or smell something horribly wrong when you drive, your check-engine light is probably for some sort of emissions sensor and can be either ignored for a while or easily fixed.
If you have a later-model Ford, get your computer codes checked (Autozone should have a scanner that will do it for free - and it will reset your check engine light for you) and check out some forums to look up your codes online to see what they think is wrong. It might be as easy as changing out an air filter and cleaning off the MAF sensor, which fixed the first check engine light on the old Windstar.

51. Oh, my dear, no need to feel bad AT ALL...what each of us goes
through at different points in our lives can be very painful, and to try to compare it to others' experiences really is useless...pain is pain, and struggle is struggle, and tough times are tough times, and how we feel in those situations is legit, regardless of what anyone else is going/has gone through!
I know what you mean, though, I feel HORRID sometimes weeping over her, when I have two other daughters and my grandchildren and my good husband...
Shortly after she died, I read a news article about a woman in Iowa who worked the night shift, and one night while she was at work, her water heater in her home exploded and killed her husband and all five of her children.
Now THAT'S mind-numbing loss...can't BEGIN to understand how she felt. And sometimes thinking about her helps, and sometimes it makes no difference. Her great pain doesn't diminish mine over Emmy's death...and mine over Emmy's death doesn't make your pain over your job loss any less. We feel what we feel.

I'll be sending the best vibes I can, dear LizzieGrace, for all good things to come to you!!:hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug: Don't give up hope!!

64. jobs will be created
and jobs exist - hold the faith, keep your head up and press on (of course, if you need time down to heal, take it). It will be okay.

70. Oh, lizzie, I am so very sorry. Saying a prayer and will send
some physical care ($) when I'm able (in a couple of weeks).

In the meantime, to you all.

I don't know what to say.

If I had any room in my house, I'd say come here. Right now, there's 3 of us in an apartment big enough for 1.

76. Damn. You need to kick life between the legs, seems to me.
Because it's not being fair to you. The Austin economy isn't bad, and we are snow-free.

79. Can't move
no way I can afford it. I paid Lelapin's tuition bill and I'll be lucky to get through this month since severance was not offered. My last check will be on the 16th for 6 days. Happy New Year. :eyes:

80. Contact the school's financial aid office ASAP - explain the job loss, and ask if
they can come up with some additional aid for your daughter and give some of the tuition back to you. It never hurts to ask. I've heard that schools all around the country are having to come up with additional aid $$ for current students whose parents have lost their jobs.
