it's funny, I always think of John Prine as one of the nicest people on the planet (no idea if that is true or not, but I'm guessing). Still, he has two songs, this being one of them, where he manages to poetically slam the object of his failed love about as hard as it can be done in song. Wish I could remember the other song right now.

And yet, you get the feeling he still really means it when he wishes "all the best".


And he and Jason Wilbur are the perfect acoustic/electric duo. They can go from the most subtle sounds to a crescendo of a wall of sound; sometimes in the same song (Lake Marie).

2. I'm feeling maudlin too tonight

with the house to myself & a fire in the fireplace,

I could write a poem...
