I've always liked this tricky trick:

These pics look pretty normal:

But the same picture turned upside down:

I'm looking for one of those with the 3-D effect if you cross your eys, but for the computer screen...

28. The faces one has to do with perceptions of faces, more psychology than
optical illusion.

The weird images don't look as threatening viewed upside down as we read smiles and eyes, which look normal in the upside down view.

So only when they are right side up do we see that they're cut and pasted, or so goes the explanation.

They remind me of the guy who does 3D sidewalk art--really interesting when you see them from different perspectives, and kind of makes you ill to think he does them in chalk and they're only temporary.

(Video version here.)

This one goofs up your brain temporarily (full screen is best).

And you can google your way to tons of ones like this (the color changes if you stare only at the center):

39. How smart is Your Right Foot?
Just try this. It is from an orthopedic surgeon..

This will boggle your mind and you will keep trying
over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but you can't!
It's preprogrammed in your brain!

1. WITHOUT anyone watching you (they will think you are GOOFY......)
and while sitting where you are at your desk in front of your computer
lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand.
Your foot will change direction.I told you so!
And there's nothing you can do about it!

You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you've not already done so.

Send it to your buddies to frustrate them too!!!!!

47. Two suns?
I don't know if you'd call this an optical illusion or a weird atmospheric phenomenon, but I took this shot yesterday afternoon from the third floor of the new convention center downtown. Note the mirror "sun" to the left of the real thing. Maybe some of you science types can give an explanation?

48. Internal camera lens effect?
Unless the light was dim enough to see it bare-eyed, it might be a lens reflection effect.

And my guess would be that the sun on the left is the reflection as it's less intense.

49. No, it was visible to the naked eye.
I had to take a few shots to capture this because it was so bright it kept blowing out. The only way to get the second sun was to partially obscure the real one.

53. I really have no idea.
It's got to be some sort of refraction thing, maybe related to the fata Morgana which we often seen here in the winter. It's not exactly the same thing, but it's the only explanation I can think of.

Some trompe l'oeil, and the old man's face within that.

There are some good illusions in Bansky's mural art in this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=4741183#4741183

55. These face illusions remind me of the book Crashing Through
by Robert Kurson about a man who gained sight in his 40's after a life without it. Very fascinating.

Basically, his brain never learned to translate the massively complex visual world while it was young enough to do so. Think about walking down the street... if you didn't understand the subtle shading and the concept of perspective as fluently as we all do, you couldn't even navigate steps or curbs. Using his eyes to survey a scene took enormous effort.

Optical illusions would not work for him because his brain hadn't been programmed to react to tricks of perspective or shading. Many illusions rely on our brain trying to correct unnatural scenes.

56. Interesting, True Story?
Sounds true.

I watched a show on TV about a test in which test subjects wore glasses that turned what they saw upside down.
After some period of days or weeks, their brains became accustomed to what they were seeing and they were functioning normally.

Until they took the glasses off!
