Does anyone else remember when Gibson was a respectable actor who just made decent films?

In the last year, he's just gotten worse and worse. Attacking his own wife like that makes him embody EVERYTHING I hate about organized religion. :scared:

8. Okay, listen very carefully...
As someone who works with them everyday, and as someone who has done so for a decade now...

ALL ACTORS ARE INSANE.

It's true. It doesn't matter how grounded they appear. They are categorically the most insecure, shallow, self-involved, gullable, and impressionable people in the world, to a man. Most of them suffer from textbook psychological disorders as narcissism, delusion, and multiple personality disorder.

I believe many of them are psychotic or sociopathic.

There. I finally said it.

38. Sure, whatever
As someone who's worked with them, been one, and been married to one for more years than I'd like to say, I can say with total authority that ALL people suffer from "textbook psychological disorders as narcissism, delusion, and multiple personality disorder.". As proof, I'd like to offer up my sister and her husband's experience as phd's in clinical psychology. 99% of their patients are NOT actors.

I will be flamed for this, I'm sure, but Mel's "insanity" appears to me to stem from his involvement with the charismatic form of Catholicism he is devoted to. My best friend's husband came from a family that was of that sect and though she was sure that he would not follow that path, he now attends a special church, just like Mel's, where they do not recognize the authority of the Pope, deny all of the reformations of the Vatican II council and he now tells anyone who will listen that his wife (my best and oldest friend) is a "Jezebel", who will go to hell if she doesn't accept his faith. So Gibson's behavior is very familiar to me and it has absolutely nothing to do with his acting career.

...to profess the tenants of your religion? There are people in every religion who believe that unless you buy into their particular flavor of divinity you are going to burn forever. Ya'll miss the comment about "comes from the chair" which I believe means the Pope. As a devout Catholic isn't he supposed to listen to the Pope and take his edicts as law?

20. Why he chooses to remain...
a devout Catholic is what makes him insane, in my book.

Twelve years of Catholic school opened my mind in a way the Pope probably would not have liked.

Most practing Catholics I know have long ago wisely let go of such rigid interpretations of their faith. And they tend to be the liberal Catholics who do all the fine justice actions around the world.

I do believe there is such thing as a religiously insane person (to steal from BartCop). I find them to be the type of person that cannot handle life without a VERY narrow and rigid religious framework that allows for zero intellectual challenge. Without those strict parameters, they crumble. And they can't seem to deal well with us folks who manage to balance intellectual curiosity and spirituality.

However, if one cannot live within the cannon of their chosen religion then they should leave tha religion not selectively follow those tenants they feel comfortable with and disreguard the rest.

21. One reason why Gibson might be insane
It is probably not a good idea to discuss why your spouse may go to hell with millions of people regardless of your religious beliefs. Your spouse might get very angry with you for the public humiliation and make your life miserable. Gibson could have easily talked about other aspects of his religion without dragging his wife into it.

30. Private conversations vs. Public comments
I am sure that they have had this conversation in the past. I suspect that Mel probably tried to convert his wife. However, it is one thing to say "Honey, I love you but you are going to hell" in the privacy of one's home and another to announce to the entire world that your spouse is going to hell.

She obviously is in it for the long haul.

There was lots of talk about Mel's affairs--even with young girls--floating around a few years back. One of the ladies' mags (Ladies Home Journal?) even ran a picture of him with his wife as the illustration for an article on "Why Women Stick by Men Who Cheat" or something like that.

...on the "tenants" (sic) of one's religion.

;-)

Seriously, I would think that for the Branch Davidians or the "Heaven's Gate" cult, just professing the principles of your religion once would be enough for most people to consider you insane.

And, by the way, Roman Catholics are only supposed to take the Pope's edicts as law when he's speaking ex cathedra, and no Pope has ever done so concerning that topic. Indeed, Vatican II (which I know Mel doesn't accept, but still...) stated that, by virtue of their baptism, non-Roman Christians were, indeed, "in Christ," even if in an imperfect manner, and could achieve salvation.

You have to make a movie about Islam for people to accept it.

All Christian are nutcases, remember? If you want to be respected, become an atheist or convert to Islam.

48. That makes NO sense...
He's insane for making a Christian movie...

Funny, Franco Zeffirelli isn't insane, nor were the makers of most other Biblical epics.

You have to make a movie about Islam for people to accept it.

This almost deserves a laugh-track. Remember what happened when the last "movie about Islam" got made? It was Mohammed, Messenger Of God (title eventually shortened to The Message), and it was, from all accounts, an extremely reverent retelling that got around Islam's prohibition of showing Mohammed himself by filming it from his point of view. It was approved by both the Sunni and Shi'ite leaderships. So, what happened when it was released? The threat of rioting (because any film version of Mohammed's life would automatically be "blasphemous") caused many Moslem countries to ban it, most theater owners in the U.S. refused to show it out of fear of terrorist attacks and, indeed (if I recall correctly) one militant group staged a takeover of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's home (for reasons I still don't understand) in protest of the "blasphemy." Yep, the best way to be accepted as a religious filmmaker is to make a movie about Islam...no doubt about it!

Martin Riggs is the only part he's been able to successfully play. So successful in fact, that he plays it in EVERY SINGLE MOVIE. (Lethal Weapon 1-4, Braveheart, The Patriot, What Women Want, Ransom, Payback, etc, etc, etc...)

On a side note, I was thinking today, Mel should have played Christ in the movie, though. It might have been cool to see him go all Martin Riggs on the moneychangers in the temple.
