Valkyrie and White Rose.
I watched the History Channel show on the Tom Cruise film. Going to see it today.

They also mentioned the White Rose an interesting group.

I also looked at the wiki site for White Rose.

With respect.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Rose
http://www.historyplace.com/pointsofview/white-rose1.htm

I think it was good for them to make the movie. And was glad History channel had a special on it.

P.S. Anyone that can recomend texts on this part of history, I would be interested in recomendations of book titles.

1. Rise and Fall of the Third Reich - William Shirer
It might as well be required reading for anyone getting started on it all.

2. I second that. I would add "Inside the Third Reich" by Albert Speer. nt

6. Those are both excellent
I got out my copy of "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" this weekend to reread the section on the 20th July plot.

3. The Arms of Krupp
Edited on Mon Dec-29-08 03:21 PM by supernova
Is a good in depth primer on how the Nazi war machine developed and was financed. It focuses on the Krupp family, but it is pretty sprawling.

4. A couple of movie recommendations
"Sophie Scholl: The Final Days" and "Downfall" are two German films. Sophie Scholl goes into the White Rose, and the trials of Sophie, her brother Hans, and other White Rose members.

Downfall is about the last weeks of the war in the bunker.

They are both subtitled, but being interested in this period of history, I'm sure the subs won't bug you.

7. I ordered Sophie Scholl: The Final Days DVD
From Amazon today, along with a couple other books. Thanks for the suggestion.
also ordered,
The White Rose: Munich, 1942-1943
Sophie Scholl and the White Rose - Jud Newborn; Annette Dumbach.
Night - Elie Wiesel (re-read)

I am really looking for more individual stories from the era, more then the mechanics of the society. I have read, and know lots about the failures that allowed the Nazi regime to rise, and I know the history of the era.

Hard to explain, but looking for more stories about individuals, excluding the Nazis, don't want to know about them.

Looking for stories from people that actually knew the people back then, or biographies.

12. You might be interested in this, then.
This man, Chiune Sugihara, was a sort of Japanese version of Oskar Schindler. He saved thousands of Jewish refugees using his capacity as a diplomat.

13. Thanks!
I have always been fascinated by the honor and dignity of Japanese culture. This man seems to be one of their many shinning lights during WW2. (Like all societies they had their tough times of coarse.)

But thanks, looks interesting.

Bookmarked that, going to have to order, or see if it is online somewhere.

14. There are a couple of books about him, as well.
The PBS special was well done.

I find stories like this very interesting. I've been intrigued since reading "The Diary of Anne Frank" in school.

Also, Viktor Frankl might interest you. He was in a concentration camp, and invented a whole new form of psychotherapy from his experience there. His book, "Man's Search for Meaning" was rather poignant.

15. I expect to read Anne Frank again
I have to admit, one of the most powerful quotes I have seen in awhile, I did not remember from her book. I saw it in a sig line of a member here.

Despite everything, I believe
that people are really good at heart.
-Anne Frank

I will look into that guys book also, from the short explanasion from Amazon

Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl's theory—known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos ("meaning")—holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful.

This may match parts of my views on things. I think I would find it interesting.
sort of the idea that many people fall into hopelessness in the form of nothing matters, or they can't do anything, then by actually trying to do anything, they work their way out of it. Simply making a difference with a smile or a kind word, can lead a person out of darkness. Maybe that is a form of finding meaning. It also may match the book, "a purpose driven life", by a pastor that is currently discussed alot here. (Still need to read that book also.)
Thanks for the tip.

5. I'd rather the movie not be made, than be made by Tom Cruise
He's certifiably batshit crazy. Germany wouldn't allow him to film in many of the actual locations, due to his being a cultist and all.

8. Check your data,
I watched during the History channel show, them take a moment of silence at the defacto memorial where the resistence officers were killed. They filmed in that very location.

And MSM did not start calling Tom Cruise crazy till he stood up against the Ritalin drugging of children.

(I am not a Scientology person, but got no problems with the label 'crazy' put on people.)

17. He was allowed to use some locations, but not all.
Also, I've thought he was crazy ever since he denied that depression is real. It is absolutely absurd to believe that depression and post-partum depression are fake. Finally, speaking as a person who has been on ritalin or a similar derivative for treatment of ADD for 13 years, I think it is a great drug and it has helped me immensely.

9. that movie about the White Rose Society sounded really interesting and sad

I would rather see that, or the Good German, than see the Tom Cruise film. My son was saying he wanted to see Valkyrie, but has since backed off, thankfully. :scared:

10. Personally I don't believe in the Valkyrie type attempt.
It is violent, and uses violence. I am in the non-violent camp. But there is something there, and I think it will be worth watching, for me at least.

18. Get the Die Tag movie about Sophie Scholl that came out a few years agoEXC
EXCELLENT. They found a huge cache of transcripts, etc. in an East German archive. All of the interrogation and court dialogue is from these transcripts. Also, alot of info came from a Communist imprisoned with her. It also is the first play or movie to really show what an important part the Scholl's parents and religion played in their decision to defy the Reich. Watch this and "Downfall" together the same weekend.

I think it should have won the Oscar for Best Picture.

23. Thanks, its the German version with English Subtitles
It has a english cover, so went and checked, thanks for reminding me. Dubed films are not as good, I can't get over that watching a film, I got no problem with subtitles.

Probably like Das Boot, where you can run the dubbed track or the original with subtitles, since it is a dvd.
