My first heartbreak came when I was 17
I dated Barbara, my first real girlfriend, for about a month. I thought I was in love with her, though much later I realized it was just hormones — but, to a 17-year-old boy, there isn't much difference.

She'd dated one of my best friends before me and went back with him after she dumped me, but it took something I still recall quite clearly for me to realize she'd been using me to make him jealous.

I was just starting to get over her. I'd stopped pining, and in a kind of celebration of my better mood, I rode my Schwinn Varsity to Foster's Freeze and got a large Coke. As I was heading back home, riding no-hands along E. Laurel Drive, a car pulled alongside me. I looked to my left and there were Marvin and Barbara in Marvin's folks' huge '69 Mercury Marquis, Barbara laying against Marvin, looking directly at me, smiling.

I threw the Coke on the ground, rode home and cried.

1. Aw
Something very similar happened to me when I was 17 and had my first girlfriend. She was mine basically for a summer and was using me just to make another guy jealous. I had a lot of fun being used, though :) and the let down wasn't as hard as what you had experienced. I guess I kind of knew what was happening. I just couldn't admit it to myself until she said good-bye.

That guy she dumped me for really treated her bad, too, in the end. I don't know what she saw in him.

3. Yup
Each successive one is easier to deal with, and at some point they stop being the end of the world. But there's always — always — that nagging "Why wasn't I good enough?"

5. You oughta change that
to something like "Why are they so fucking STOOpid that they can't see how much ass I kick?"

:)

7. Have either one of you two
thought about exploring these feelings with a counselor? I'm hard on myself, too, and I often don't feel too worthy, which is probably the reason why I'm posting on an internet message board at 4:30 in the morning instead of snuggling with a honey-bunny. But I have started seeing a therapist about these feelings and I'm beginning to see that I can control the way that I feel about myself, instead of letting others dictate that.

8. Out of necessity and a great need for self-awareness,
I've become somewhat skilled at auto-analysis over the years. The "Why wasn't I good enough?" bit doesn't last very long anymore before it changes to a rather honest "Eh — her loss."

I rock. :headbang:

10. How funny!
Mine too! Shannon Cummings. She absolutely ripped my heart from my chest. Then her friend Kristen came along and put it back in, sewed it up, and convinced me that it was HER I was really in love with! It's amazing what can happen in the space of 4 hours on roller skates at Skate World!

18. Did you grow up in the San Antonio area?
I knew a Cummings family. All girls; all smart and good-looking. One of them was Shannon. If it's the same girl, I understand... ;)

11. We give others so much power over our hearts don't we
I have a lifetime of similar stories I could share.
The young heart breaks far to easy I think, and people can be assholes(that goes for men too).
I had a knack for turning those I truly cared about in to friends which basically turned me in to a eunuch.
In my younger days it pissed me off to no end.Now I'm Okay with the curse. :) Some of my biggest crushes turned into my bestest friends.
And all is how it should be.

12. It's one of life's harsh lessons that all must learn.
Very, very few escape it. It teaches you to guard your heart and be wary of who you trust. Pain is a stern instructor.

13. Nasty. Some women are just like that.
Edited on Sun Dec-28-08 07:42 AM by HypnoToad
Age 21, at my first job, a coworker smiled and winked. I took no notice but mentioned the fact to another coworker.

A week later, she and her boyfriend stopped by and he accused me of making up nonsense. I denied, he warned me to stop. As they turned to leave, she turned her head back, smiled, and winked again.

Note I said "some women". I'm sure there are adult women in this world, somewhere.

Edited: Clarity in subject line

22. my first heartbreak came at the hands of a teenaged girl, but in a slightly different manner
brian and i dated for the summer between freshman and sophmore year and things went to hell when a friend of his (i use the term psycho hose beast in the nicest way possible) called him and told him she was going to commit suicide if he didn't dump me for her. and, you guessed it, he bought it.

i was devastated over the breakup and it took me years to get over it. i still think about it from time to time and the old hurt flares up.

forget sharks, lions, tigers, grizzlies, scorpions and water moccasins. teenagers are just about the nastiest creatures out there.
