Update on My Mom - It's Fucking Cancer.

My dad just called.

Colo-Rectal cancer in the form of a blockage which is a tumor.

They are not sure if it's benign or malignant, and if so, if it has spread anywhere else.

She has slight blood loss and they're not sure from where.

She is scheduled for surgery first thing Monday morning.

For what it's worth, two of my great-aunts had rectal cancer. One was diagnosed at age 70, the other at age 85. They lived to age 88 and 99 respectively. They were strong women, and both said they'd go when they were damn good and ready.

My grandmother had the same thing happen to her when she was 90. A blockage led to her diagnosis. The tumor was removed and she lived eight more years, without the cancer returning. I'll pray for the same outcome for your mother.

25. Be sure she is at a top research hospital. I once had a bad experience with

a local, community type hospital and they were way off base as to how to treat my condition (ulcerative colitis.) They wanted to do major surgery that would have affected the rest of my life and, instead, I transferred out to the University of Chicago.

At the U of C I received treatment from one of the top gastroenterologists in the country and I was home in a week - no surgery at all!

I used to work for him at the U of C. I interviewed family members of our patients to make a family tree, and got them to go to their docs to have blood drawn. There was a national study looking for genetic markers for IBD.

You want to be at a Comprehensive Cancer Center, mostly found at big, university teaching hospitals.

CCCs are the research orgs set up by Congress in the early 70s as part of the War on Cancer.

At least they found it. Now they can get it out and figure out what it is. Everyone told me that my kidney tumor was cancer, but after a month and four pathologists, they decided that, while it had cancer cells, looked like cancer, and acted like cancer, it wasn't really cancer, so the surgery cured it.

There is still hope. Cancer sure does suck, though. I'm so sorry she's going through this.
