Name or post a song you want played at your funeral
Edited on Fri Dec-12-08 10:13 AM by PeterU
I'll start:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28w4_cJK8Ss

"Farewell and Goodnight". I can't think of anything more apt. Especially the beautiful piano at the end.

Yeah, predictable me, the Pumpkins fan. But that song gives me the chills everytime I hear it.

I miss Tommy Makem. He was a staunch Democrat who held fundraising concerts for gubernatorial hopeful Paul McEachern back in the 1980s when it wasn't easy being a NH Democrat.

Edited on Fri Dec-12-08 10:21 AM by SteppingRazor
That oughta get the bastards sobbing :)

On edit: Lyrics --

Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath
Keep me in your heart for awhile

If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for awhile

When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for awhile

There's a train leaving nightly called when all is said and done
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Sometimes when you're doing simple things
around the house
Maybe you'll think of me and smile

You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on
your blouse
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall into view
When the winter comes keep the fires lit
And I will be right next to you

Engine driver's headed north to Pleasant Stream
Keep me in your heart for awhile

These wheels keep turning but they're running out
of steam
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Keep me in your heart for awhile

9. "For a Dancer" -- Jackson Browne.
For a Dancer, by Jackson Browne
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IU1rZa8Ur_Q

Keep a fire burning in your eye
Pay attention to the open sky
You never know what will be coming down
I dont remember losing track of you
You were always dancing in and out of view
I must have thought youd always be around
Always keeping things real by playing the clown
Now youre nowhere to be found

I dont know what happens when people die
Cant seem to grasp it as hard as I try
Its like a song I can hear playing right in my ear
That I cant sing
I cant help listening
And I cant help feeling stupid standing round
Crying as they ease you down
cause I know that youd rather we were dancing
Dancing our sorrow away
(right on dancing)
No matter what fate chooses to play
(theres nothing you can do about it anyway)

Just do the steps that youve been shown
By everyone youve ever known
Until the dance becomes your very own
No matter how close to yours
Anothers steps have grown
In the end there is one dance youll do alone

Keep a fire for the human race
Let your prayers go drifting into space
You never know what will be coming down
Perhaps a better world is drawing near
And just as easily it could all disappear
Along with whatever meaning you might have found
Dont let the uncertainty turn you around
(the world keeps turning around and around)
Go on and make a joyful sound

Into a dancer you have grown
From a seed somebody else has thrown
Go on ahead and throw some seeds of your own
And somewhere between the time you arrive
And the time you go
May lie a reason you were alive
But youll never know

And…

What a Wonderful World

AND

Keep me in Your Heart for a While – Warren Zevon

11. Rufus Wainwright's version of "Hallelujah"
And Billy Joel's "Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)," for the sake of my son.

Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)

Goodnight my angel, time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you've been asking me
I think you know what I've been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away

Goodnight my angel, now it's time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say
Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing on an emerald bay
And like a boat out on the ocean
I'm rocking you to sleep
The water's dark
And deep inside this ancient heart
You'll always be a part of me

Goodnight, my angel
Now it's time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be
Someday your child may cry
And if you sing this lullabye
Then in your heart
There will always be a part of me

Someday we'll all be gone
But lullabyes go on and on...
They never die
That's how you
And I
Will be

31. I made a playlist
called "For My Funeral" about 6 years ago - I keep adding stuff to it. On the list is:

Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground - Willie Nelson

Trouble - Cat Stevens

If You Want To Sing Out - Cat Stevens - I want this one played for my kids because I tell them the same thing all to time. :)

Well, if you want to sing out, sing out
and if you want to be free be free
'cause there's a million things to be
you know that there are, you know that there are

Well, if you want to live high, live high
and if you want to live low, live low
'cause there's a million ways to go
you know that there are, you know that there are

You can do what you want
the opportunity's on
And if you find a new way
you can do it today
you can make it all true
and you can make it a new, you see
ahaha it's easy, ahaha you wan't me me to know

Well, if you want to say yes, say yes
and if you want to say no, say no
'cause there's a million ways to go
you know that there are, you know that there are

Well if you want to be me, be me
and if you want to be you, be you
'cause there's a million things to do
you know that there are, you know that there are

refrain
If you want to sing out, sing out
and if you want to be free be free
'cause there's a million things to be
you know that there are, you know that there are

Going Home by Mary Fahl...

They say there's a place
where dreams have all gone
They never said where
but I think I know
It's miles through the night
just over the dawn
on the road that will take me home

I know in my bones
I've been here before
The ground feels the same
though the land's been torn
I've a long way to go
The stars tell me so
on this road that will take me home

Love waits for me 'round the bend
Leads me endlessly on
Surely sorrows shall find their end
and all our troubles will be gone
And I'll know what I've lost
and all that I've won
when the road finally takes me home

And when I pass by
don't lead me astray
Don't try to stop me
Don't stand in my way
I'm bound for the hills
where cool waters flow
on this road that will take me home

Love waits for me 'round the bend
Leads me endlessly on
Surely sorrows shall find their end
and all our troubles will be gone
And we'll know what we've lost
and all that we've won
when the road finally takes me home

I'm going home
I'm going home
I'm going home

63. Leave Out All the Rest by linkin park
I dreamed I was missing
You were so scared
But no one would listen
Cause no one else cared

After my dreaming
I woke with this fear
What am I leaving
When I'm done here

So if you're asking me
I want you to know

When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some
Reasons to be missed

And don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory

Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest

Don't be afraid
I've taken my beating
I've shared what I made

I'm strong on the surface
Not all the way through
I've never been perfect
But neither have you

So if you're asking me
I want you to know

When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some
Reasons to be missed

Don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory

Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest

Forgetting
All the hurt inside
You've learned to hide so well

Pretending
Someone else can come and save me from myself
I can't be who you are

When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some
Reasons to be missed

Don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory

Leave out all the rest
Leave out all the rest

Forgetting
All the hurt inside
You've learned to hide so well

Pretending
Someone else can come and save me from myself
I can't be who you are
I can't be who you are

Lyrics:
Deep inside the forest
there's a door into another land,
here is our life and home.
We are staying
here forever in the beauty of this place
all along, we keep on hoping...

Maybe,
there's a world
where we don't have to run,
and maybe,
there's a time we'll call our own,
living free in harmony and majesty,
take me home, take me home.

Walking through a land
where every living thing is beautiful.
Why does it have to end?
We are calling
all so sadly on the whispers of the wind
as we send a dying message.

Maybe,
there's a world
where we don't have to run,
and maybe,
there's a time we'll call our own,
living free in harmony and majesty,
take me home, take me home.

There's a world
where we don't have to run,
and maybe,
there's a time we'll call our own,
living free in harmony and majesty,
take me home, take me home.

78. "Rock You Like A Hurricane"
I want my pallbearers to carry me out like I'm a pro wrestler going to the ring. Lot of lasers, smoke machines, scantily-clad women. Then I get a funeral pyre that everyone cooks hot dogs on. Plenty of Pabst to go around. Fuck yeah.
