10. Judging from the poll results, I think it's safe to say...

...that DU considers James Brown both the Godfather *and* the King of Soul!

17. He is the king of Hot Buttered Soul.
A CIA recruiter turned me on to Isaac Hayes back in 1969.

He got me really high and played the record for me.

Hey, it WAS the 60's.

14. In terms of longevity, no one reigns supreme.
King of Soul, yeah, he's done a bunch of hits. Had a kick-ass horn section too.

My favorite one is "Pass the Peas"

JB coined himself the Godfather after the first movie released.

Awww who am I kidding. Lately I've been leaning towards the genius Ray Charles. Go put on Live At Newport or Drown In My Own Tears and be prepared to weep.

We're a small fringe, but we SO funky that cockroaches call us "sir/ma'am" and rattlesnakes move aside when they see us coming.

BTW, what's the most frequently-used phrase in Wilson Pickett songs? "Lord have mercy!"

Pickett STILL Stax up!
