I Gave $20 To A Homeless Person Today
What's the largest amount you've ever given a homeless person?

(for those wondering, I was with a girl when said homeless person transaction occurred...I'm in love, so right now I'm not thinking straight) ;)

7. I usually would give some folks I would see a dollar or two
and then I did start to worry about whether they would spend it on alcohol since some homeless folks do have some pretty serious addiction problems. But I still give money. If I had seen the person a few times, I would sometimes give them food or something to drink. Some people I know prefer to give food coupons.

37. 65-85% suffer from alcoholism, drugs, mental illness
According to "A Nation In Denial", Alice Baum and Donald Burnes state that most homeless face alcohol and drug problems.

According to their research at least 65-85% of all homeless adults suffer from chronic alcoholism, drug addiction, mental illness, or some combination of the three, often complicated by serious medical problems.

6. that's not nice
anyone who can toss aside their pride and muster up the courage to ask a complete stranger for money face-to-face is probably not going to buy beer with it.

He was asking me in the parking lot of a Burger King. After I gave it to him he went right into the place.

I made the mistake of giving some of the homeless around my bar change. Only to have them come in at the end of the night trying to cash in quarters and dimes and nickels. I couldn't figure out why until another bartender explained to me dealers won't take change. And I have seen plenty of the neighborhood homeless exiting the deli across the street with beer. I won't give money anymore. Sometimes I'll give food out of the back of the kitchen, which is usually gratefully accepted, but you'd be surprised at the number of times it's not and money is asked for instead.

I gave a homeless girl twenty bucks to get into a shelter, and this winter I gave out some old coats and blankets on 15th street. But honestly, most of the homeless I encounter are drug addicts and they won't get my money anymore.

31. No shit.
I don't care what they spend the money on. I think the proper mix would be two cheeseburgers, a 12-pack, and a bottle of booze.

Or a bottle of booze and two funky Hos.

26. Exactly right
the callousness of some of these holier-than-thou fuckers pisses me off. There are a growing number of homeless families due to foreclosures, bankruptcies, unemployment, etc. The largest increase since the Great Depression. God forbid some of these solid citizens find themselves in dire financial straits some day.

11. I gave a guy in downtown Tampa
a sandwich, he looked at me funny, I hope he ate it.
I'd give food to the guys hanging outside the wawa stores in downtown philly.
I drove for wawa and my hours were 11pm to 7am.
My wife always gave me too much food.
The guys used to watch my truck for me.

16. When I know I'm hitting downtown SF, SJ, or PA
I fill my pockets with all the change I have collected during laundry and the nightstand$'s. I know some will use it to feed addictions.....but, guess what, they're addicted!! ALL research I have seen shows addiction to be a disease.
The most I have given was to a woman at the 11th street off ramp in San Jose. She had 3 children with her - no one looked healthy. She had a look on her face I had not seen since being in Lima many years ago. I gave her all my bills, somewhere between $80-140, I'm not sure. I went back there a number of times over the next few weeks but never saw her again.
I still wonder what became of her, and her children.

30. In my opinion, it matters not what they do with the money
what matters is that I did the right thing when called upon.

If the person misrepresents themselves and goes out to get booze, thats on their conscience, not mine.

I'd rather help people who don't need it, than not help people who do.

32. I gave 6 hours of my life picking produce.
Seriously. Back when I was in college I spent 6 hours on a Saturday picking produce at a local farm whose yield went to the local food bank. Hardest days work I've ever done in my life.
