I do think it's rare for a woman to do that, but yes, it does happen.

Makes me feel like they consider me their toy or something.

4. They see a woman they don't know and they tell her to smile
because it pleases them. They are saying - I don't care what your internal state is and you don't know me from Adam, but I want to see you smile, so do it. I can't count how many times I've had this experience- with men who I don't know and have never had a conversation with. It takes a lot of nerve.

7. It's not a control thing--more of just a very lame flirting technique.
I don't think they actually care if you smile. They just want a lame excuse to start up a conversation with an attractive woman.

It comes off as insulting and cowardly.

21. My normal facial expression tends to be a bit scowly too. It has nothing to do with my state
of mind. In my younger day, I absolutely hated when complete strangers, always men, would command me to smile. I found that saying something like "Fuck off -I'm not your puppet, dickhead" usually got through to them.

Of course, now that I'm old and fat it doesn't happen anymore. And that's a good thing, because I would be even less inclined to tolerate it. Probably kill anyone who tried to say that now. ;)

19. Well, it's not the first thing I say to people, but
it comes out in some form if I'm talking to someone and they are interacting with me.

Though, I guess I really haven't been interactive with many people in years. I've grown to not like interacting with people in general, because of the games they play. Smile at the right time, know all the signals they are sending and receiving. No one says what they are thinking. Women, especially, think any man who smiles in their general direction is Mickey Rourke trying to de-pants them. Even men think I'm hitting on them if I smile too much. I haven't "hit on" or deliberately flirted with anyone in recent memory, but just smiling and joking with people for some is considered flirting.

And since I enjoy life and smile all the time, I try to avoid people who don't smile and don't enjoy life and are more interested in protocol than life.

But the times I do meet people and interact with them, I try to get them to smile. And I don't trust those who don't, unless they have a reason not to.

If someone has already introduced themselves, and we are talking, of course there's no problem if they try to cheer me up/get me to smile. That's normal human interaction.

It is also normal human interaction to smile at anyone--even a stranger. I find that nothing but endearing.

But when a perfect stranger walks up out of nowhere and commands me to "smile", I find it odd and annoying in the extreme. And actually, so do most people.

And I don't think someone who smiles or jokes is "flirting" so much as being friendly. But(and you would know this if you were female) most guys (strangers) who tell women to "smile" are usually just trying to get to flirt with you. It's the wrong approach.

25. Trying to get someone to smile by smiling yourself or making ...
jokes is perfectly fine.

Telling a woman to "smile" implies that she
is looking like a sourpuss hater.

NOT acceptable.

49. Have you ever considered that the person may have a very good reason
not to be smiling?

If I were in some sort of serious distress--such as having just lost a job or heard of the death of a loved one--I would NOT appreciate being told to smile on command.

If you want people to smile, you have to do something to brighten their day so that they smile naturally.

Its kind of like the story where somebody complimented a formerly fat person on finally getting control of their weight- and then found out they had pancreatic cancer.

23. I'm very smiley! And yet, I too have been told this...
I think my natural face might be a serious one. I won't say scowly, lol. Still, I tend to be naturally smiley. That's why it's irritating when someone tells me to smile. Uh, ya smile when you feel like it, NOT as a performance for your enjoyment. I never found it to be flirty, just annoying. Telling someone to smile does not change what they are feeling.

On the flip side, I have been asked what I'm smiling about even when I didn't realize I was smiling.

Anyway, yeah. I can't stand it. I can't help it if my face doesn't look happy and smiley when I'm relaxed--it doesn't. It never has. Or, the people who say, "Smile, it's not that bad!" Oh really? And how would you know this? Maybe it is that bad.

I know most people are just trying to be nice but man is it annoying, especially since 99% of the time I wasn't in a bad mood when they (essentially) told me I was.

Grammar error ("Where's those" = "where is those") aside, I usually just smile to quickly make the whole thing go away and say something like, "Sorry! The request line is closed!" That's weak, I know, but this has happened to me in business situations more times than I care to recount.
