It was the weirdest damned thing I've ever heard.
It was a loud buzzing sound- I coulda swore it was coming from the water pipes in the wall. Every time I turned on a cold water tap, the sound would change, so I was fully expecting the pipes to burst any moment and destroy the walls. The sound was that bad, and that loud. It was loudest just behind my bed, natch.

The evening maintenance man came when I called (amazing, that!) and he heard it too and was just as stumped as me. He went to listen to the walls from the other side, and even had another tenant come in to listen to it.

My respect for the maintenance man went up considerably tonight- he finally figured out it was the sound of a bad air conditioning fan in the next apt. over. The second he said it I realized he was right- it was the sound of a fan with a bad bearing.

Damn, he's good!

I WAS right, tho'- the fan WAS making the pipes vibrate...
