Fuck.
A house a few doors down is on fire.

Shit. Everybody got out okay. Young renter family. That's the only good news.

That's terrible.
Happened here a few months back. All of their companion animals died, too. :(

14. I hate myself a little bit now.
When I ran out my front door, I found myself relieved that it wasn't my house or the house next door.

16. That's normal, love.
As is your reaction. The technical term would be survivor guilt.

You'll feel a little better if you bring the firefighters a snack or something so you feel useful.

2. Horrible.
My heart goes out to them and you for having had to witness this.

It's a traumatic thing. People don't realize it until they see it with their own eyes or know someone.

Every.

Damned.

Sorry to hear about it, buddy - hope they get the help they need.

5. That's true. We had a family burned out here last Christmas, and it was
related to poor wiring and them trying to keep warm because our heating bills here are ridiculous.

7. And that scares me.
I am renting a large, old farmhouse - "old" being the operative term.

Not too many upgrades, you know?

I recently bought renter's insurance and after reading this, I will be calling our local fire dept and getting the Totfinder decals for the upstairs windows.

There's never a good time of year to lose everything, but this is the worst... :(

I'm glad they all got out. I hope they have renters insurance. I really hope they have renters insurance.

11. They just moved in, maybe a month or two ago.
I didn't know anyone lived there until I saw kids on the porch a couple weeks ago.

9. That is awful.
There was a fire in a neighboring building last week...I think it was minor...I wouldn't have even known about it if my cat hadn't started growling loudly in my ear and woken me up. Good kitty!

15. Oh, wow. That is so scary.
Happened here about 10 years ago. House burned to the ground. Arson. The family was inside, but got out safely.

Very, very scary stuff.
