The but tutcher is failing Kindergarten!
Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 01:35 PM by mcctatas
his teacher assured me that if they actually graded academics he would be well beyond his peers, but since they focus on social skills and listening, he is failing (albeit in a spectacular fashion). Of course since he reads, knows all of the states/continents and most of the countries and also does math in his head I am sure it is kind of hard to stay interested in another round of "Name an animal that starts with the letter ___".

But the best part; they won't move him ahead to accomodate him academicaly because he is a social moran, but I have a feeling that if he were actually interested he would at least stop saying "teacher, this is stupid" every five minutes!

4. My Parents like to tell the story of my Kindergarten Teacher threatening to fail me
because I couldn't skip and showed other evidence of physical (and social) awkwardness.....

I was one of those oddball kids...you know...the academic type....

That was 43 years ago, nice to see educators have progressed.....

28. My mom told the story of my getting an "unsatisfactory" in social development
When my mom called to ask about this, she was told I "lacked leadership skills". My mom always laughed about how I lacked leadership skills at the age of 5, nearly putting my academic career in jeopardy.

Of course, I still lack leadership skills, but if I can fake it for another 17 years, I'll still draw a decent pension.

That way, within the boundaries of what is possible in the school, you can insist that he receive enrichment.

40. A 504 is a watered down version of an IEP or an
Individual Education Plan. You get the child tested and make noise that you want one and they have to, by law, accomodate you in a fair and reasonable manner as the budget allows.

It's designed for kids on both ends of the education spectrum, learning disabilities and gifted.

We were lucky to be living in Westchester County NY at the time. Extraordinarily high property taxes, but, the services he received would have been much more than the 20K a year in taxes we paid had we been forced to obtain these services privately.

23. Lots of systems don't have them.
My district decided to split my daughter into
a split kindergarten/1st grade day.

Within 3 weeks, they just eased her into
1st grade. She was challenged there and
fit in size-wise.

(She was NOT happy about starting earlier
in the morning. AT ALL.)

Your son is apparently smarter than the teacher.

If he repeats kindergarten, you run the risk of having him hate school forever.

You'd think with the number of kids who fall into that same crack, the school systems would have noticed and started MAKING A GODDAMN NICHE for them, instead of just holding them back.

Hell, just about everyone I associate with was like that in elementary school.

And middle school.

And high school.

You have described her to a T. She's in 1st grade, but last year her K teacher had the nurse check her vision because she wasn't coloring in the lines! :eyes:

This year when she has a good day, it means she was very busy. Don't even get me started about the fact that they only get one 20 minute recess - there are other 1st grades in the building that get two. She has her problems in the afternoon, right around the time they would have recess if they let them. Ugh.

Edit because I forgot to add that yes, she is also academically ahead. Couple that with a lack of shyness and an extroverted personality and you have a challenging child to teach. I just wish they would take up the challenge. <sigh>

67. I hope the kid just realizes
he does not want to accel in the fashion the peers consider 'social success' For instance, if for years a population has been fed BS, then 'listening skill' is a joke. LOL. And ignoring becomes the best skill. Tell the donkey he can reach the carrot on the stick in front of him. Would the 'valued' person listen to this?

the animal left off of animal starting with A___ thread. ASS :)

But in a deeper context, You are right, achievement is not based on how hard someone works, or how smart they are. It is how well they work with others for common goals. Sometimes when a boss is ego filled, or power hungry, this means how well a person kisses up, but with good managers its how well they get along with co-workers, and even customers.
