Tim Robbins made me cry.
Edited on Sun Feb-29-04 10:20 PM by Bertha Venation
Don't lock this as a dupe, please; it's really not related to the Oscars.

I expected him to say something about the Bush Administration. Instead he said, IMO, something far more meaningful.

I did not seek any help for a long, long time because of the shame I felt for allowing myself to be abused. (No sympathy please; I'm long over it and have forgiven everyone.) People -- especially kids -- need to know there is no shame to be had if you're an abuse victim.

The shame is the abusers'. But that wasn't Robbins' point. GOD, I hope just ONE kid who's being beaten or raped or mind-fucked saw his speech and takes it to heart, and one day seeks help. Please, God.

Edit for those who missed it: In short, Tim Robbins ended his speech by saying his character had been abused as a child, and he exhorted all victims of such abuse to seek help because there is no shame and no weakness in seeking help.

1. I missed that.....
was on the phone with my mom. We were both pulling for him and saw that he won, but I missed the speech. He was an abuse victim?

3. No, but his character was.
I am SO glad he won this. But his speech topped all.

5. Oh, sorry, I misread your post.
Sorry, my mind is a little elsewhere tonight.

I take it you have seen the movie and his performance resonated with you?

8. Haven't seen it, but know the basics.
His speech resonated deeply with someone I used to be. I'm rarely caught offguard by that anymore.

2. Sorry I missed it--got home too late...
...I would have liked to have heard the speech, and think he's a wonderful actor/director/person and would have loved to have heard his name called out.

4. Just shows what incredible class Tim has.
The quick shot of him after Billy's W slam was eloquent enough social commentary.

He knows how to pick women, too.

6. I'd have to give him two thumbs up.
FR will probably endorse abuse now because Tim condemned it.

7. Tim Robbins....
... poster boy for the hate crowd, is one of a handful of people in the movie biz I really admire. He tells it like it is and doesn't worry about who doesn't like it. And his wife ain't bad either :)

9. He won for Mystic River? (I'm not watching.)
I was hoping he would--his performance was fantastic!
