11. They used them because Geddy plugs his bass into the arena's sound system,

and so doesn't have any sound equipment to fill up his side of the stage.

In order to get some balance between his side and Alex's side, he came up with the dryer idea to fill his space. And, on the latest tour, replacing the dryers with chicken rotisserie cookers, with stage hands coming out occasionally (or perhaps people who won radio contests, I don't know) and basting the chickens.
