Who else here is NOT a "Black Friday" participant?
I'm a Buy Nothing Day kind of guy, but I'm seeing nothing but crap about BF on the news.

1. I avoid stores at all costs that day
It's much more fun to stay home and watch the news and people trampling each other at the big box stores doors.

Someone needs to make a montage of that shit

3. I'm not a Buy Nothing Day participant because I'm not against shopping on that day
I am against overconsumption, or wanton consumption for its own sake.

But what day people buy things on, for me that's not the issue, it's how much, it's instead of what, that's the issue for me.

5. I am celebrating Buy Nothing Day as well...
I don't go anywhere near the stores on Black Friday as I find it to be an incredibly repulsive experience. While I used to be in the minority I think this year we will see many more people staying home, the economy is in rough shape and I don't think people are as excited about shopping as they were in years past. People will probably go out in the early morning for the bargains, but throughout the course of the day I would expect less shoppers this year than there have been in previous years.

We've always had something else to do--work, school, etc. I'd like to try it someday just to say that I have, but it probably won't become a habit. I get a little uneasy about the "Hey! It's BLACK FRIDAY! You're totally SUPPOSED to go shopping today!" propaganda.

13. I stay away from the stores on Black Friday as if they were disease-bearing organisms.
Just watching the local news footage of all those fevered, harried people rushing through the aisles and the malls, grabbing merchandise off the shelves, yelling back and forth, looking sweaty and worried, is enough to keep me away for all of "Black Weekend."

The "War on Christmas" is a marvel of seasonal reverence and gravitas by comparison.

17. It would take an act of Ghod to get me in a department store on Black Friday.
And by that, I mean the good lord would have to appear to me in the flesh and personally direct me for apparently valid reasons to go into the store. Otherwise, it's Nineveh all over again.

18. We have a Black Friday ritual.
There's a Tanger Factory Outlet mall about 5 miles from us.

http://www.tangeroutlet.com/foley/directory/

The parking lots cover acres and acres.
On Black Friday the lots are FULL and shoppers are parking a mile or more away, on roadsides, in fats food parking lots, and walking in.
The SUPER SPECIALS go on sale at the stroke of midnight.
And there are CROWDS there to buy them.
It's insane.
:silly:
Last year the mall started running shuttle buses from outlying parking areas.

I like to drive by on Black Friday and see how far away folks are parking.
I'm betting that this year the lots won't be full.
But we are in Alabama, so who knows?

We had a Tanger outlet mall go in near us a couple of months ago. I haven't gotten around to going up there to see it yet and I'm certainly not going there on Black Friday. That day is reserved for movies, football, and leftovers.

nearby.

We want a camcorder (since my life partner poured water all over our old one and wrecked it) and they have decent brand new ones for around $100. And the tent sale offers some sort of discount from the usual $100 pricetag.

If people were smart, they'd all stay home on BF - scare the stores into cutting prices deeply and early. Personally, I don't see the appeal of shopping at all, and I can't comprehend why someone would find pleasure in going shopping on a day when lots of other people are also going shopping. Seeking out a crowd? Why?

In fact until just a few years ago I never knew what it was. I did not know it was the day after Thanksgiving and then I still didn't know what it meant. I remember the Steely Dan song Black Friday which I figured was about about the 1929 stock market crash.

I'm probably wrong about that one too.

I'm safe anyway -- I have to work the day after Thanksgiving.

I thought everybody did . . . . . oh, well, I guess everyone who works in retail!

BTW, there is little that irritates me more than the headlines about shopping trends on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and the quotes from individual shoppers. I don't give a flying fuck if Gloria M, from Bethesda, has only three more gifts to buy. I really fucking don't.

75. I hate being in those kinds of demented crowds.
There are stores here that will open at 4AM! And they will be crowded all day.

We will go shopping one last time today, and not again till maybe Monday.

We plan on taking walks with the dog in the country, around the lake, etc. and go for drives.

Mostly, we will stay home, play guitars, eat even more read and nap.

76. I will be at home Friday, maybe working on a honeydew list
but strictly at HOME. No cash will leave my wallet on Friday or Saturday or Sunday.

77. My mind is boggled when I consider that there are people who actually...
...enjoy fighting huge crowds in order to buy stuff.

I Do Not Want

78. I too find it bizarre that people get excited about getting up to be at a store
before 5 am, and will stand in line to be the first one in.

:wtf: Get a life people.
