Mud Season in NH is far worse that snow season!!! Help!
I went to Boston today. When I left NH this am the dirt road was frozen and easy to negotiate. I returned at about 4 this afternoon...the temperature was in the 50's. I pulled onto the dirt road and slid and slid and slid. It was worse that driving in snow and ice. No traction, getting caught in other peoples' tire groves and just sliding back and forth. There is one big hill before my place and I barely made it. I have never driven in anything like this muck. Anybody have experience with this who can tell me how to drive in it???

1. Welcome to New Hampshire
This is an extremely early mud season and I bet it doesn't last, giving us the pleasure of two mud seasons in one year.

the good is that with the light snow pack we won't have much either way.

My solution is to stay home until BlackFly season.

2. I almost got stuck in the mud today
Luckily, I have 4WD. Just got out and turned the hubs, put her into 4WD and climbed right out.
If you're gonna stay, get 4 wheel drive.

3. Damn! I HAVE 4WD!
Should I have put the car in 3rd, 2nd or 1st gear?

8. 3rd. gear Steady 30
Same for snow. 30 mph at all times on unplowed roads.

No Brakes or very light touch.

DON'T STOP

11. It's not printed on any map that I've ever seen, but
there's a place here that's actually named Mosquitoville.

4. I noticed it at the dump today
Excuse me, the "recycling facility".

The melting the last few days has given us an early mud season. However, I still have snow up over my front door so it's going to be a while before it's gone.

Welcome to the north country! I agree, get AWD.

7. but Seriously
I live on pavement but I've been caught by the mud on my way to fishing.

People I know on dirt roads have said that without All wheel or 4 wheel drive, which don't help much in the grease we call mud, you should actually think like a sailor with the tides.

Plan your trips when the road us frozen. Today that would have meant staying in Beantown an hour or two longer or not going at all.

ahhh Mud Season. The rest if the world just doesn't know what its missing.

9. Yet again, great advice here!
Stay in 3rd, go slow, don't stop and travel the raod when the temps are low. I think I can do that! Thanks! :hi:

13. That's all the best advice
...My little town doesn't have any paved roads, so we're pretty good at the mud thing. "Get out early while it's cold" is the best advice up there... also a good time for dog walking, as they are much cleaner when you get home! :D

10. During Mud Season, Farmer Jones was carefully making his way down
the road when he espied a hat lying right in the middle of the road. So he stopped and picked up the hat.

Farmer Smith who was under the hat, up to his chin in mud, said, "I'll thank you to put my hat back on my head, Farmer Jones!

Ah Vermont and New Hamshire. There's nothing like them...

12. We'll be trading gray, sub-Arctic temps for gray, mild but rainy days..
We're more respectful of our mud here than you folks, apparently, but maybe it's because our mud sells for about $5k/acre. :P

14. You are having it early; we are having ours now, in Western NC.
That is, way up in the higher elevations, like 4000 feet or so. Many access roads to hiking trails (and the trails themselves) are deep, soupy mud this weekend. On Friday my buddy and I hiked to a waterfall, and I got mud on every garment I had on.

15. can get pretty messy in NY, too . . . just ask my dogs . . .
who actively seek out any soft and wet spots available in the back yard, just to do a little mud-bombin' before they want to come back in . . . I'm goin' through towels rather quickly these days . . . but I still love 'em . . .
