Why Do Some People Hide Their User Profile On DU?

I notice this more and more- Why are some of you hiding from the rest of us?

are often hiding from someone specific--a stalker, for instance.

Judge people by what you can see, not what you can't.

But I know people who have changed their names here or on other boards to hide from someone, and they sometimes block their profile, perhaps under the assumption that the stalker will recognize something about them.

DU members to self-classify as one of the following:

1. Little idiot.
2. Little super-genius.
3. Big idiot.
4. Big super-genius.

Then it would be easy to turn around a discussion that has shifted into personal attacks and bring it back to objectivity.

For example, if someone says, "You're wrong and you probably think that you're some kind of super-genius" then someone else could reply by saying, "No, check my profile. I'm a little idiot. So there!"

23. I know 4 people personally in the past 7 years that have been stalked across message boards

triple that if you include USENET. The Internet is heaven for people who stalk/harass others, especially women. I've seen it; I don't begrudge anybody hiding their profile, especially on a board like this.
