Meet Shadow (pics)
the newest addition to the Spacemom family. My husband saw him walking along the highway on his way home yesterday. He pulled over and coaxed him in the car. No collar. Brought him home and I fell in love! The best we can guesstimate he's about 2 months old. He's skinny and has worms but we started treatment and we can see a difference just from the few good meals he had last night and today. He's going to be a BIG dog.

2. Isn't he though
from the looks of him, he's pretty close to full blood lab. I walked out to greet my husband as he pulled in the driveway. He said look what I have in the back seat. I picked the puppy up and he just looked me and laid his head on my shoulder. As quick as that, I was hooked.

7. It's one of the reasons I love him
He stops, when so many others just drive by. :loveya:

Shadow loves fetching the ball, it seems to come natural to him. :D

11. I think I'll have to
We were out in the yard and I picked up that yellow ball to put it up. His entire body started wagging, like the tail was wagging the dog! Just to see what would happen I tossed it across the yard. It was ON! I tossed that ball so many times!

4. He looks happy
Edited on Sat Nov-22-08 08:45 PM by hobbit709
Good for you to take him in. That's how we got all ours except one. They were all rescues that we took in because we found them or nobody wanted them. Boo, our Aussie was the only one that I got deliberately. I got her as a Valentine present for my wife back in 1991 and there was no doubt whatsoever that she was MY dog. She went over the Rainbow Bridge last year at the age of 17.

10. I think he is happy
he's bony and I think he's been scrounging for a while. He's probably so glad to be eating regularly. I know it's a bit of personification, but his eyes are so expressive. It's like he's looking at me with gratitude.

I'm sorry about your Aussie. It sounds like she had a wonderful life.

13. Not huge. Smaller than a German Shepherd.
Edited on Sat Nov-22-08 09:24 PM by BrklynLiberal
Size, Proportion and Substance
Size--The height at the withers for a dog is 22½ to 24½ inches; for a bitch is 21½ to 23½ inches. Any variance greater than ½ inch above or below these heights is a disqualification. Approximate weight of dogs and bitches in working condition: dogs 65 to 80 pounds; bitches 55 to 70 pounds.

The minimum height ranges set forth in the paragraph above shall not apply to dogs or bitches under twelve months of age.

Proportion--Short-coupled; length from the point of the shoulder to the point of the rump is equal to or slightly longer than the distance from the withers to the ground. Distance from the elbow to the ground should be equal to one half of the height at the withers. The brisket should extend to the elbows, but not perceptibly deeper. The body must be of sufficient length to permit a straight, free and efficient stride; but the dog should never appear low and long or tall and leggy in outline. Substance--Substance and bone proportionate to the overall dog. Light, "weedy" individuals are definitely incorrect; equally objectionable are cloddy lumbering specimens. Labrador Retrievers shall be shown in working condition well-muscled and without excess fat.

16. Thanks for the info
It's still a little daunting to imagine a 80 pound dog wandering around the house. :D We've always had little dogs.

20. Ohhhhhh what an adorable little guy!
I'm so glad that your husband took the time and stopped to help him. Now you both have a friend for life.

Just an fyi, there are two types of labs, American and English. They have differences in their build. I can never remember which type has which physical build. Some fill out and others are prone to being thinner. I've seen them very tall and very short legged and some that I believe are a blend of the two. I've seen 60-140 pound labs and some that are so tall their face is well above the kitchen table height.

Enjoy your new little guy and thankyou so much for saving him.

26. What a cutie!
What fun you all will have together. I like the name too :hi:. We always had Lab mixes until we got Cindy and Murphy (Catahoula Leopard and ACD). I love Labs. I would have a dozen of them if my husband would go along :-).

Shadow is a cutie. I see why you fell in love.

My family had a black lab mix when I was growing up. We used to hit tennis balls for her with a tennis racquet just to wear her out. She would chase balls until she dropped. Best doggie ever.
